Arrow Ordinary World (Billie Joe Armstrong, Fred Armisen, Selma Blair)

Billie Joe Armstrong, Fred Armisen, and Selma Blair cast in punk comedy

Quote:
Fred Armisen, Selma Blair, and Judy Greer will join Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong in Geezer, a new movie about an aging punk rocker. Armstrong plays the aforementioned punk, who’s both a dad and father and is dealing with a midlife crisis. According to Variety, he’ll attempt to recapture his former glory days with a blowout 40th birthday party in a hotel’s presidential suite, where he’ll run into both his old bandmates and his ex-girlfriend—all of whom have apparently moved on with their lives.

Armstrong has also written songs for the movie, which will co-star Dallas Roberts, Brian Baumgartner, and Chris Messina.

The thread title had me interested until I saw who was starring. Couldn't they pick someone with more punk credibility, like Donny Osmond?

I love how this thread has diverted into a de facto This Must Be the Place discussion...Armstrong is a phony.

Green Day has been my favorite band for most of my existence and Billie Joe Armstrong has been one of my personal heroes for equally as long.

I went into this film as objectively as possible and I found it to be one of the most enjoyable films of the year. I wouldn't go so far as to call it perfect, but I found it to be incredibly entertaining.

I'd probably dismiss BJA's performance and let it slide if he did a poor job, but I must say that he did a great job and perfectly captured the character of Perry Miller. As I watched the film I couldn't help but wonder how a rock star like BJA would operate in an ordinary world (pun not intended) if Green Day had split or took an indefinite hiatus (like it was looking after they had released 2000's Warning).

Despite the film being light and humorous, there's little bits of reality riddled throughout the film, particularly in the idea of letting your glory days and dreams slip away and waking up to find yourself in a place that you didn't imagine possible (this relates back to my reflection on the direction of the members of Green Day if they hadn't continued writing music; 2016 marks their 30th year together woo hoo).

The soundtrack is great. Devil's Kind is the standout song of the film for me and I had been wildly anticipating the studio version of the song (as the only version thus far has been a live performance from Tribeca Film Festival). There's also a cover of The Replacements' Unsatisfied in the film (another great band; Westerberg will forever be the man).

All-in-all, it was a fun little film and it exceeded my somewhat high yet apprehensive expectations.

P.S. BJA's oldest son Joey makes a cameo appearance in the film and BJA's youngest son, Jakob, has a song used in the film.
