Hhhmmm...

Light controlled via Harmony remotes or their own app.

Lowe's/Home Depot/Menards have a display.

It works.

Much like Nest...there would be more discussion...if it didn't work.

Well...what's next?

Bluetooth door locks?(I have one at each house)

Both houses have Wi-Fi thermostats. Log in to the app, turn on your GPS and miraculously...the house is at a comfy 72° once home. Leave the house and the thermostat drops to 62°.

Hue can also be set up to turn lights on based on how the app is set up in individual phones. Pull into your driveway...voila...light.

I have been thinking about this, but I am worried about security.
Is there a risk to introducing this to the home network?

If you are worried about security, then place those components on a separate system and keep them off your primary system. I assume most connect via WiFi? If so, set up secondary SSID on your AP (something like guest mode but different) and associate a VLAN tag ID with that SSID so your home router can place it on a secondary network away from your primary. Then permit or deny what you want with the secondary network. All depends on what you are running for WiFi and router/firewall. Low end stuff will not support this. Anything mid level or up should handle it. If running your own firewall on an appliance or PC, something like pfSense will do the job.

I have a cheap standalone webcam (from NewEgg I believe) that is always trying to contact some server in China, so I set up rules to disable its access to the Internet. I still use the camera locally to watch my washer and dryer in the basement so I know when that load is done, but it can no longer talk outside my house which is fine with me.

I have an early Philips ball light and it was the biggest waste of money I ever made. I love the light, but there are no controls on the light itself... only using a remote. And soon after I bought it, they came out with a new ball light with a new remote that was incompatible with the one I have. The remote broke and I can't get a replacement anywhere. Bricked.
