Default I went with the Samsung instead of the Sony 4k TV

This is not a post to bash on Sony or anything, this just for me to tell you that I had a bad experience with a brand new TV out of the box. I purchased a brand new Sony 850D, and out of the box the Sony was giving me issues with the 4K and HDR content. The TV would freeze with a still image, and it was not the receiver because I also purchased that new. The receiver is a Marantz SR5011. And I have a new Samsung K8500. Anyways when the movie would freeze and it had it's still image I would shut off the receiver and the blu-ray player, and the image would just still be there. I thought to myself there is something wrong with the unit. I also had a light leak on the bottom right hand corner of the TV. You would notice it so much on dark scenes and even on light scenes you would still be able to notice the light leak. Mind you this is the first time owning a Sony. I always swore by Samsung. Well to make a long story short.

I went back to Best Buy, and I returned the Sony. I purchased the Samsung 8000 series, and boy I was able to tell the difference right out of the box without me even calibrating the unit yet. The HDR is amazing and the regular Blu-rays look insane! The PS4 pro looks phenomenal as well.

I want to know from you guys have you had a similar experience with Sony products? I'm very hesitant on ever buying a Sony TV again.

I have had both Sony and Samsung TV's over the years (still got two Sammy Plasma's) and I would recommend both companies, as I have not had any issues with them.

I will be buying a 4K UHD HDR TV in 2017, and I would feel safe if I buy either of these brands. Sony OLED should be amazing

Yeah, I was reading about the Sony OLED. What I'm concern about is the Dolby Vision and HDR10. I wonder who is going to come out on top. I wonder if Sony, and Samsung, and the other TV manufactures are just going to adapt to Dolby Vision as well next year, and if they do, I hope they push a firmware update or they sell a evolution kit for the sammy.

That's why I love my LG OLED, they support both DV and HDR10.

That's unfortunate you had the issues with the Sony X850D. I've had mine since May of this year and have had no issues with light bleeding or displaying HDR content. I also own the KS8500 player from Samsung which I use for UHD Blus.

I had the same experience. Bought a Sony 65 850D, hated it and its crazy light bleed, and went over to a Samsung 55 ks8000. I am 100% in love with my 8000!

it is a crime that a tv company can advertise HDR on a tv thats barely 350nits. the brightnes makes a HUGE difference to push that HDR and vibrancy of the picture.

Does anybody have real world experience with Dolby Vision? Direct comparisons with actual footage between HDR10 and DV? It seems that everyone easily claims how much better DV is but it's all based on back of the box info with no real experience from watching content, let alone being able to visually tell the difference between it and HDR10.

What about when HDR10 gets an update for dynamic metadata?

I think the whole DV is a little overblown for now...
