Doesn't Rimmer "deactivate" when he goes back into light bee form, providing his own form of stasis?

Received my North America Season XI in the mail today. Sadly, it's 1080i instead of 1080p. Season X was 1080p. Sigh... BBC.
And didn't this air in 1080p? Will look forward to anyone who can provide info if there is a 1080p version of this release. As well as any audio pitch issues. |

There's a UK thread about this too, I dug up a little bit more info, so I'll post that here too.
Red Dwarf X Blu-ray was 1080p at 24fps. I can't imagine XI being shot interlaced - I imagine it would have been shot progressive, using Arri Alexa cameras. What I don't know is if it was shot 24fps or 25fps. The BBC did the same thing with their release of Outcasts. Also filmed on Arri cameras, the Blu-ray was unfortunately interlaced. (They also didn't air Outcasts - or release it on Blu-ray - in the original aspect ratio shot and intended by the Director of Photography.) If Red Dwarf XI was shot interlaced, then I understand if the Blu-ray release is interlaced. But I don't believe that's the case here.[/QUOTE] |

The UK Blus of X and XI are both 1080i50. It's shot 25. Sounds like the US release of X was slowed down to 24p but for whatever reason has been converted interlaced this time. Stuff like the end credits are interlaced on it, maybe that's why?

So to help me understand, if it's shot 25, why is it interlaced 50 on Blu-ray? Why not just 25fps progressive, so that you're not messing around with it, and so that it doesn't require de-interlacing on playback - and do the same in the UK and US?
One of the great things about Blu-ray was that generally it's not interlaced, unlike DVDs. With the way that some UK shows are treated on Blu-ray, it feels like a step backward, especially when the content was shot progressive in the first place. I back up all my Blu-rays and then I watch them from my computer via HDMI to my TV, so I have no issue watching things with different framerates. But are framerates a problem when playing directly from a Blu-ray player? |

Okay, so recently I bought for about $35 dollars the one-disc US set of Red Dwarf XI. I don't have to re-explain that I'm a huge fan....
But I gotta tell you, I'm a little disappointed. The second series in a row not to have a commentary track with the cast, the asking price of 35 bucks seems just too high-priced to start. Furthermore, the shows just aren't...well...that funny. It sort of reminds me of another show I'm a collector of "Big Bang Theory", where after Season 7, I tend not to rewatch the later Blu releases as much because they don't have what earlier seasons had in overall comedy appeal. Granted, the NTSC slowdown issue from Series X has been resolved and you have a full length documentary of the season to go with, but it boils down to the shows themselves which makes it worthy of a purchase of not. Not that it's a complete disaster, episodes like "Officer Rimmer" hold well, just overall not as funny as even Series X. The sets, video/audio, and even the guys look great (didn't really need to know that Rimmer now wears a hair-piece, leave something for the imagination!), but this 6 episode Series didn't grab me like the others. It is possible since everyone is getting up in years, that because they're shooting Series XI and XII back-to-back with no two or three year wait, that they left the better scripts for XII. I at least hope that could be the plan.... Anyway, definitely not the place to start for newbies to Dwarf (Series VI will always be my favorite), but not a complete loss. Just sorta strange how I laughed maybe only twice in 6 shows. Smeg. Last edited by RedSabbath; 11-25-2016 at 08:38 PM. |

Blu-ray can't do 25p (very short-sighted of Sony), so it has to be encoded in a 50i stream. I can still be 25p and the 50i is just a contained format if you like. But as I said, this has some interlaced scrolling material.
US players and TVs generally won't do 50i at all which is why they need a conversion either by slow-down to 24p (4% slower but smooth for true progressive shot material) or converted to 60i (which is worse, it keeps the original speed but has to invent frames either by interpolation which softens/blurs or pulldown which introduces judder on pans and the like). I'd never be put off by a 50i disc, most of the time that means it's preserving the original look and speed. 60i conversions I don't like, Back to Earth used a 60i convert in all regions and I noticed some judder on it. |
