I swear that I've see some bee movie threads on this board, however, I search the whole forum by keyword "bee" ends up no matches. I wonder where did they go.
The PQ of Bee Movie is definitely good, although not as good as ratatoullie(you know the spell). It is better than happy feet, TMNT etc. I noticed that the bitrate is around 29-31 Mbps(AVC), on the highest edge that HDDVD can afford, unlike the WB HDDVD-port animations, which are around 15-20 Mbps. I watched the dreamwork jukebox supplement. I notice that except one movie, shrek I, all other MTV's comes with HD. However, the MTV from Shrek I looks like upconverted DVD to HD with very high bitrate (around 20Mbps AVC). I wonder if it indicates that dreamworks are working on other animations (to be specific, Shrek 2 and 3 <well, we know it is already out on HD>, flush away, shark tale, over the hedge), but not shrek 1? I am really looking forward to see Shrek I on Blu-ray, I hope I was just wrong about that. Edit: searching for "bee" just returned because the system think this word were too common. Searching for "Bee Movie" got me a blank screen. Last edited by ranma; 06-04-2008 at 06:24 AM. |

I went into the cinemas completely open minded. I was ready for anything. Right from the word go, the movie just either tries too hard to be something it's not, or tries too hard to be better than something it doesn't really have any right to be. It's not clever in any ordinary sense, or funny, or anything, really. I think Jerry Seinfeld is a funny man, and anyone who's seen his work on Seinfeld or in particular his stand up comedies, will agree, but this film is so devoid of laughs that it's hard to contemplate that he was ever involved with it.
The animation is fair at best. It's relatively simple, and compared to films like Happy Feet or Ratatouille, it's very poor. Watching it in the cinemas I even noticed a few glitches and moments where characters went off-model for split seconds. Honestly, the most fulfilling part in the entire movie is the final scene, and only because of the music playing in the background. The only times I laughed in the movie were where I probably wasn't meant to. The film uses jokes as a way to distract us from what's really going on, but when it finally reaches the third act, there isn't a single thing that can distract us from what we're seeing on screen. The thing about Bee Movie is that the movie might have been fine if it had some redeeming qualities to it. Hell, not even picture quality, sound quality or special features can redeem it. Don't agree? Ask any of the 4...maybe 5 other people in the cinemas when I watched it. I think there absence of laughs will explain it then words ever could. I feel this movie didn't know what kind of audience it wanted to aim for.
The movie really fails as a children's story. The jokes can be kind of subtle and esoteric - certainly not the kind of thing that young kids will appreciate. The plot itself doesn't really pander to children either, as there's no clear-cut moral or normal character redemption arc. The plot is very grounded in the adult world of career decisions and ripple consequences. It also fails to hold the attention of the older group that likes the cuteness and family-oriented nature of the Pixar films. This group will understand the movie, but fail to be charmed by Seinfeld's dry humor as opposed to the more general humor on display in similar animated films. Really, to enjoy this film, you have to be old enough to appreciate the issues at work in the plot, have an enjoyment of Seinfeld's dry brand of humor, and be comfortable watching these things combined into a fairly immature movie. That's quite a tall order, and I certainly understand why this movie was kind of a bomb. I enjoyed my viewing, but I get why many did not. |
