PJ How bright is too bright?

With some 2016 models being cleared out, I am tempted to do an upgrade. However when I use the calculator on my setup to compare old PJ to new, there is quite a difference in the calculated image brightness between the two units. The old PJ computes 13 fL vs the new is 43 fL. That is more than 3X.

Assuming there is no bug in the calculator for the old or new PJ, that would be much, much brighter. Do not understand why because old PJ is 1600 lumens and new one is 1900. That should not factor into 3X brighter image should it? Have double and triple checked the calculator settings, but both are the same screen gain, screen size and throw distance.

I guess my options, if I buy the new PJ, are:

- I could run it in eco mode, but no way to run that through calculator to know how bright eco mode would be.
- And/Or change of screen to something with less gain, like a grey.
- And/Or add ambient lighting.

This will be used in a room with total light control, so I am not fighting ambient light issues and I do not need a light cannon.

No room for larger screen, maxed out at 16x9 126 inch. But that screen is 1.4 gain and I could replace it for 1.0 gain to reduce image brightness to 31 fL. A 0.7 gain grey drops it down to 22 fL.

Old PJ = Epson 8700UB
New PJ = JVC RS600U

Before I do anything, I wanted to check the image brightness from other systems for a reality check on the numbers from the calculator. How bright is your config and how bright is too bright when in dark room?

Or is there a setting on the RS600 that could darken the image even more, some iris setting?

Do not want to spend all that money and then create more problems to solve.

Update: Found this article http://www.projectorcentral.com/home...age=Brightness which makes the following general rules of thumb:

dark room 12-22 fL
ambient light 20-40 fL

Now if I could only understand what to expect from the RS600 in full and eco power modes. Thus far the math is not making sense to me, so the quoted lumens in the specs mean nothing. 265W bulb, is 200W is eco mode. Is this a linear scale? Can I scale the projector calculator result by 200/265 to get what to expect in eco mode?
