Default Panasonic announces Dolby Vision + HDR10+ 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray player

Quote:
Panasonic has taken the wraps off a new trio of 4K Blu-ray players set to be launched in 2018. And out of the blue, one of these new models introduces support for the Dolby Vision HDR platform.

That model is the flagship DP-UB820. And not content with finally bringing Dolby Vision support to a Panasonic product for the first time, it’s also the first 4K BD player to support the HDR world’s other dynamic metadata HDR system, HDR10+.

Awesome news if true. Will be getting this player. The HDR optimizer function sounds quite interesting.

Panasonic UB900 was criticized because it lacked DV for a high end player, this fixes that, HDR10+ support is still more or less the Amazon streaming app in the player. Big excitement there but they are supporting it in their new OLED TV's for 2018.

And, of course, for Ultra HD Blu-Ray playback that will be coming this year:

Ultra HD Blu-ray metadata generation tools have been developed with third parties and will soon be available for content creators enabling Ultra HD Blu-ray players to enter the market. Details on the content transfer and interface format for the content creation pipeline will also be released shortly.

Pretty good for HDR10+. DV was officially announced 3 years ago, and there are only 2 blu ray players that support it. HDR10+ was officially announced 8 months ago, and there is already one blu ray player announced that supports it, with another one (Samsung's 2018) that will be announced next week.

Great. Now all we need is some movies that are worth watching that have DV or HDR10+

Another guy who thinks HDR10+ won't be put on disc, and that Panasonic bothered to put HDR10+ on their blu ray player only for streaming. LMAO

Next week will be a fun week. Lots of people about to be proven hilariously wrong.

With ALL the features on this (these) Panny player, what's the MSRP going to be? Will it be the same as the 2017? Especially across the water after the 2017 players were excessively priced? (for all brands)

Dolby Vision, surprising but smart move!

Now what about their TV sets?

None of their TVs will have Dolby Vision. Only HDR10+.

Very interesting, just when I was starting to think I would never see DV on a Panasonic player (or a Samsung). Strong move.

It will be interesting to see if the flagship player is an improvement over the UB900 for the PQ.

Not yet bought a UHD player so I'm hoping some of the entry level 2nd gen machines will be covering all the HDR bases!

The current Panny models already have the HDR optimiser.

Its interesting that the new top model is a UB820 and not UB920. Its also lacking the feet the UB900 has.

Nice!! May just be the first true universal player if true. Still weird a major party of HDR10+ would also include DV support when they are trying to push a competitive standard. What if they also end up adding DV to their 2018 TV's? Will be an interesting week for sure.

I understand from a business perspective they want to sell more players but I cannot see Samsung doing the same for example. Just how when Samsung dropped 3D from their TV's they dropped it from their players. Why add support for a format your very own TV's do not support especially if your pushing HDR10+? I don't know but to me(my own speculation) it just does not show 100% commitment to HDR10+ if your gonna help widen the availability of support for DV also.

Either way if true it is a win for consumers to not have to choose so I applaud Panasonic on this. Still fun to speculate though.

Yeah this is pretty interesting. I'm curious to see what the prices are going to be because I was planning on going with the Oppo 203 at the end of the month. Now I might end up waiting a little longer if the Panasonic is comparable.

I was going to get the Oppo but I think it’s smarter if I wait and see how much this unit is.
