United Kingdom The Hired Hand - Arrow Academy

Coming from Arrow in November.

Here's hoping it's a new restoration.

Is there a difference between arrow academy and arrow video?

Otherwise i should get the latest western movies released by arrow in hope they keep release such western movies. Already got Day of Anger and i think i will buy cemetery without crosses and requiescant anytime soon.

Arrow Academy is the 'prestige' line from Arrow Video, for films that are a bit more 'arthouse' than 'cult'.

I've not seen it but I'd imagine The Hired Hand is more of a revisionist American western, whilst the films you mention are Spaghetti or Euro Westerns (i.e. made in Europe - usually Spain/Italy - with generally European casts, and in Italian/French usually dubbed over in English).

Okay, thanks, good to know

I do indeed prefer italo/spaghetti/euro westerns but if movies like High Noon, The Magnificent Seven, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, The Proposition, 3:10 to Yuma, Appaloosa and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford do count as revisionist American western...i guess i like this genre as well

Yeah I actually was big into Spaghetti Westerns and revisionist Westerns myself during my teens, and only in recent years started watching 'real' Westerns. I like them all in different ways - For A Few Dollars More and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford being two of my favourites of the overall genre, another being Shane.

From what I've heard, this films is more akin to Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid than the others you mention. It came out the same year as McCabe & Mrs. Miller - a year after Little Big Man, and before Bad Company - if that means anything to you. I'm definitely interested in it, as not only is it a 70's revisionist Western directed by and starring Peter Fonda, but it also stars Warren Oates and Verna Bloom (Medium Cool), and was shot by the legendary Vilmos Zsigmond. That's enough for me to warrant a blind-buy!

Loving the artwork.

It's going to be hard letting my 2 disc Tartan DVD digipack go. Found it last night - it's very nice.

There's a short interview (2 mins) with Scorsese on the 2nd disc. Not sure if this is going to be included on this blu-ray?

(This is another film I discovered through BBC2s Moviedrome in the 80's.)

This is a pretty exciting release for me. Very underrated and little seen film IMO, very moving with great soundtrack and visuals, especially all the optical fading/double exposure stuff. Unfortunately there was nothing said about a restoration or even a 4K scan, so I'm a bit skeptical, I really want this film to get the release it deserves If anyone has any more info about it I'd love to know

Yeah, very cool of them to add The Odd Man doc, Scorsese interview and NFT recording. Might have to get this sooner than planned!

Looks like this has turned out to be a pretty solid release. Thinking about a blind buy.

I'm assuming the booklet is included as well, as advertised on their store page?

"First pressing only: Collector’s booklet containing new writing on the film by Kim Morgan."

Two new extras =

This became very quickly one of my favorite movies. Not even waiting on a sale for this one.

I had completely missed the news that Arrow are releasing this gem of a film. Definitely day one for me. Seems like a really solid package with great extras. I wonder if this will be a brand new restoration or not. Seems unlikely since it was "discovered" and restored back in the early 00's (?)... This film has some really lovely visuals and my favourite soundtrack of all time. Not forgetting Warren Oates and Verna Bloom! Can't wait for this one!

I totally agree about the soundtrack, it's a beauty!. 'Arch Leaves' and 'Ending' are near perfection.

Also... I can't believe that two of my favourite westerns - The Hired Hand and One-Eyed Jacks - are being released a day apart.

The soundtrack to this film is as gorgeous as the cinematography... So much so I had to import it on vinyl

Watched this over the weekend. Absolutley loved it, very beautiful and atmospheric film. The Soundtrack is fantastic.

Very pleased with this release, Ive only managed to watch the 50 min making of and deleted scenes (which were rightly deleted in my opinion) on the supplements so far.
