Talking PS3 + Onkyo SR605 + Speakers; need help =)

Hello,

I have a PS3 connected to a Sony Bravia KDL-40XBR4 through HDMI. Now I need a surround sound system.

I have been reading a lot on this forum, I'am new and started my support for Blu =)

Anyways, ive been doing a lot of reading and I was leaning towards buying the Onkyo SR605. However, I went to an AV store and the owner told me that Onkyo makes their products with bad quality parts.

So I would like peoples own experience with this receiver or the higher end ones such as SR705, SR805. Forget about money, tell me about the quality.

Do they overheat? If so, how long does it to take to heat up? Is 7.1 better then 5.1? Are the qualities of the receivers big enough for me to go to another model?

I just want awesome sound with PS3 and Blu-Ray. Also any speaker suggestions for Onkyo SR605 if I decide to buy it?

Thanks, Would be much appreciated

My 805 was a dud, but I've heard the 805 in action with the speakers I purchased, and the combination is a wet dream for the ears. The nice thing about the 805 is that it is a unit that has some lifespan to it through the specs. You have a few HDMI inputs instead of just 1 on the 605 (I could be wrong on the 605 though).

Here are the speakers I got. I ended up with the MT-20 package. Each speaker is about $250 CDN and the three subwoofers in the series range from $400 to $2200. I got the mid-range sub (AS2). The speakers are nice and compact, pack a nasty punch, and come with bookstands as well as wall mounts. Floor stands are sold seperately.

The funky looking golf ball design subwoofer is the expensive one.

The bang for the buck of my system is off the charts! I think my PS3 runs hotter than the Onkyo 605. I watched a couple of movies during the rainy day yesterday and my son played Guitar Hero 3 and the sound and vision were truly amazing. Do yourself a favor and get this setup now!

I bought a Onkyo HTs-650 6 or 7 years ago. It's a work horse and it sounds incredible with no real probelms. Onkyo does a nice job with their speakers and especially with their head units.

My wife got me a 605 for christmas so that will be hooked up when I get back home. I wouldn't be upgrading at all if blu-ray didn't offer the beautiful sounds of uncompressed audio. I'd probably get 3-5 more years out of it if it weren't for blu-ray..

I've been looking around at speakers myself for awhile now. I don't have a million bagillion dollars to spend on my speakers, so I'm buying the Onkyo SKS-HT540's. The set of Onkyo's I have now are great and the 540's seem to have been well reviewed (as long as you care more about sound than the size of the speakers) so another set of speakers for < $300 is right up my alley.

I have noticed quite a few people recommending those speakers with the SR605. I will try to find these on display somewhere and try them out. \

Im trying to spend around 300-400 on speakers alone and this seems to be a good deal!

Thanks for the replies

The only thing im worried about is getting a receiver that wont decode future Blu-ray audio.......when I say future I mean the next 2 years....should I even be worried about this?

I want a home theater, but will upgrade in about 2 years.

...It's not something to worry about. Most players can decode, so receiver decoding is not an absolute must (but some people prefer). Just making sure you get a Receiver that can handle HDMI Audio (Multichannel PCM) is definitely a priority if you want HD audio.

Also, the description of the receiver will tell you if it can decode the new audio formats so you shouldnt have a hard time picking the right one.

UPDATE: went to Best Buy yesterday and tested many speakers and configurations.

I realized that 7.1 is a waste of money and space for me. 5.1 would be perfect for my setup, games and Blu-Ray.

Anyone know of a good 5.1 speaker system that would work well with this receiver?

Im hoping to get all of this within a few weeks so I can finally have uncompressed audio. I listed to the difference between compressed and uncompressed, OMG, BIG difference!!

I know alot of people on this forum have had older a/v equipment that they tend
to upgrade when looking at new equipment. Don't let them steer you into the super high end expensive speakers unless you have the cash to do so. Iwould recommend the onkyo HTSP908 you get the who package with the 605 receiver and all the speakers.

Wow, havent seen this before. I didnt even know this came in a HTIB. I noticed you have the PS3 hooked up to this, nice.

I just have to go and see this for myself, know of any retailers that might have this?

Before I buy electronics, I like to test them myself, just a habit

well I guess it's not worth it unless you add a 2000 dollar 7.1 speaker setup
