Oak speaker stand construction for bonus room

I'm adding speakers to the bonus room system and needed some speaker stands (that will be another thread). I looked all over the web and could not find anything I liked, so I decided to build. They were constructed in a Frank Loyd Wright style. I have an album that shows some of the main pictures -- let me know if you have any questions. For some reason I'm having problems uploading all the picture off the iPhone, and as you see they are loading sideways.....











I had some 1 3/4" inch red oak planks to do the build. Fortunately I have a decent workshop so I was able to plane and shape the boards with little effort.

Everything is solid red oak with the exception of the center post (white cedar) and the outrigger feet (poplar). The thought is the dissimilar wood aides in the decoupling. The front L/C/R stands have poplar feet, the side surround stand feet are from some old red oak stock I have that is hard as stone.

I need to get them on a scale for the correct weight, I would put them around 40 pounds+.

FYI - I also will use Adam Hall speaker isolation pads on the speaker platform.

Materials:

• 1 3/4" inch oak planks
• 2x2 poplar stock
• 2 inch cedar plank
• 2 7/8" HeadLOK wood screws
• Gorilla glue
• Dayton DS3-G speaker spikes

For each stand:

1. Cut, shape and sand base 10x15x1 3/4"
2. Cut four outrigger style 2x2x3 feet
3. Cut 2x4x19 white cedar center post
4. Two 1x7x19 red oak side pillar supports
5. Trim front edge with red oak 90's and crown trim
6. Cut 1x8x12 speaker platform

Assembly steps:

1. Cut and layout wood
2. Center 5/16" drill feet for spikes
3. Attach outrigger feet with 1 1/2" in off-set
4. Assemble pillar pieces
5. Mount pillar to base with HeadLOK screw
6. Drill cable hole through base
7. Add cable guide
8. Install speaker platform and Dayton spike feet
9. Oil or stain

Thanks -- you may want to consider picking up some Adam Hall isolation pads to place under you speakers, they will really open them up. This will help to "decouple" your speakers from the mount and wall. I'm using them on many of my speakers and swear by them.

Amazon has them on sale for $18.00.

Mounts look good Krell. Is the foam under the mount to prevent injuries?

Thanks! You bet, I was by the electrical outlet and stood up fast, almost blacked out when my head hit the wood,... That was 3 days ago and my head still hurts! left a nice lump...I don't want that to happen again until I get used to it there...a few months at least

Yikes!! Feel better! That foam looks like it will be a life saver!

Thanks! Yes it will......even if I end up needing it just once, it'd be worth the effort to install the foam. The oppo foam just happened to be the right dimensions and fabric.
