Default Is This the End of the Disney Vault?

Speaking to shareholders today, Disney's Bob Iger answered a question about the content that will be available on the Disney+ streaming service, and his answer was startling, and has kicked off a metric ton of conjecture.

"When asked about the offerings coming to Disney+ and movies locked away in the Disney Vault, Iger explained that the ENTIRE Disney library of vaulted titles would be available on the service.

"At some point fairly soon after launch, it will house the entire Disney motion picture library,” Iger said. "The movies you speak of that have traditionally been kept in a vault and have basically been brought out every few years will be on the service."

It will be interesting to see if, when Iger says the “entire” library, he really means the ENTIRE library."

(story can be found here, but warning -- contains a pretty big spoiler for Avengers: Endgame)

https://www.laughingplace.com/w/blog...older-meeting/

Anyway, Iger didn't actually say the vault was going away. He didn't say that physical media was going away, and he also didn't specify what he meant by "the entire Disney library". His answer has only begged more questions.

"The suspense is terrible. I hope it lasts."
- W. Wonka

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves has been available for three whole years now. That is the longest span of time this movie has been available. None of the films have returned to the Vault when they should have by now. The Vault is dying and will be officially dead when Fantasia, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, The Jungle Book and Aladdin are available (either on Blu-ray or on Disney +).

The limited time offers that eveantually go back to the vault ended 3 years ago with the start of the Walt Disney signature collection. It’s been a long tradition since 35 years ago when the Walt Disney cartoon classics limited gold editions were released and I think other movie companies did the same with their stuff like the wizard of Oz, gone with the wind, et the extra teressial, Star Wars, the best of Kermit on Sesame Street and Barney’s colors and shapes, exercise circus/parade of numbers and reissues of the classic collection

No way it is everything they have made.

But I'm sure the typical "vault" style titles will be there.

Although it's mentioned in passing at the end of the article Ernest posted to start the thread, I'm surprised no one else has brought up that if the "ENTIRE Disney catalog" (Iger's words) will be featured on Disney+ that there's a distinct possibility that Song of the South may finally make an appearance in the US.

Don't think so...Bob Iger needs that aggravation like he needs a bladder infection.

Just think of Song of the South as being lost. Until Disney actually says, "Song of the South will be available", it's locked in a secret, separate vault inside the vault.

I don't understand why studios hold on to films that they are so afraid of. Same with The Devils and Warner. Why not just sell it to another company and wipe your hands of it? That should be a win-win for everyone. The studio makes some money and can finally distance itself from the film and fans and scholars can easily access the film.

While I'm sure it'll be full of good content, consider me skeptical until we actually see stuff like the complete existing Oswalds or Victory Through Air Power.

Disney owns some of the most cherished films in history. You would think those are the type of films people would want physical copies of

He'll prove that statement to be true only if Song of the South is on there.

Wonder if this will included all the classic tv stuff. Disneyland, Wonderful World of Disney, Mickey Mouse Club, Spin and Marty, Zorro, etc. And all the theatrical shorts.

As long as it isn’t DNR’d like their BDs, then the digital service will be interesting.

As someone who cherishes each and every bonus feature and watches them each time I watch the corresponding film, this + service only interests me for the things that are not on disc, and those will need to be plentiful indeed to get me to pay for it.
