Dead thread revival, I was actually looking to see if the Chak De India BD release had a thread of its own, but apparently not. How come, I thought this forum at least at one point used to have a lot of SRK fans and this was regarded as one of his cool movies.
Anyhoo, I happened to see the film on Prime as a Movie with Mum experience during the weekend. For a long time I had been dithering about watching this movie. Mainly it was on account of catching on youtube the clip where SRK's coach throws out a bunch of players till one of them steps up and says "India". It struck me as an immensely annoying piece of poseur patriotism, and I was not eager to watch a film packed with that kind of preachiness. But I was wondering what to show her, and just decided to go with this as a rah-rah crowd-pleaser. CKI has to be given a lot of leeway because it was one of the early sports movies (Only Aamir Khan had done a couple before), and possibly the first which featured the lead guy as a coach rather than as a player. Of course, our hockey coach is a former player Kabir Khan who became (in)famous for having lost a World Cup match with Pakistan (horrors!) and was promptly disgraced as a traitor. We have no clue of what he has been doing in the interim, but he promptly turns up before a panel of sneering selectors to apply as coach for the Indian Women's Hockey team, and is selected because apparently no one else wants the job. I find this hard to believe, because any job with a salary attached has takers in this country, and if it were a job that carried no expectations of performance, a lot of people would want to take it up purely as a cushy position. Anyhoo, Coach Kabir is given a bunch of recruits to train. To establish his hardass credentials, he throws out players for joining late or daring to mention their domicile state. With a mixture of sermons and sadism he starts to shape up the team. Since there is no romantic interest for our coach (kudos for avoiding that cliche, though one wonders if we might have had a more rounded portrayal with the coach as a married man) a fair amount of the running time can be spared to focus on the gallery of women that make up the team. This is a good thing since we get to see some interesting new actors, including Shilpa Shukla as a haughty former captain, who constantly rebels against the new coach. There's also one Sagarika Ghatge, who is shown to be engaged to a cricketer beau that sneers at her "gulli danda" game (apparently she later got married to an actual cricketer, oh the irony). If you've seen any sports movies before, you know how this goes. Initially the team is a total mess with the players up in arms against each other and their coach. They learn little by little to tolerate and then stand together as a team. There are no surprises at all. SRK's Kabir is in a little bubble of his own - he doesn't seem to have a personal life (Where is his mother when he's at the training camp? Does he put her in a storage freezer somewhere?). Every time he opens it's mouth, it's to eject a homily. Even the scene where he talks about his period of disgrace carries little empathy because it's so rote. Dangal's protagonist was cliched like that too, but the grounding of that narrative in a family setup made it more acceptable. It was nice, if also a little funny, to see a movie from "Indian means Punjabi and Punjabi means Indian" YRF in which characters from South and North East regions of India are given a chance to thumb a nose at the Hindi-Punjabi belt. The character of Sagarika's cricketer beau is such a one-note boor you wonder why she puts up with him even if she were a clerk instead of a national level hockey player. If you love your job, you can't let someone, especially a spouse, put you down for it in that fashion. Even in a populist film, you can have a more layered portrayal. On the other hand, CKI movies at a fast clip, and surprisingly easy to endure even in its nearly 150min running time. While it could have been written better and less idealistic, SRK is more restrained than in other YRF movies. Mum was pleased and I didn't have significant regret about seeing the film. ![]() |

I will definitely buy Pathaan on Blu Ray. Not that I think its the greatest film ever lol. But its become a sensation.. Can't remember the last bollywood film that created hysteria like this. So i'd buy it for the keepsake alone. As a movie tho (even tho this isn't a review thread) its wildly entertaining and has repeat value as well. Really hope YRF releases this one, even if it comes in that ridiculous special packaging.

Does anyone know how long after OTT do YRF normally (or previously) release their physical media?

Does anybody else have problems with their old YRF blu-rays sometimes? First I got a faulty copy of Veer-Zaara that would freeze after the first half (I got a new one and it works fine). Now I got a copy of Kal Ho Naa Ho that freezes then skips about 2 minutes at one point. Wonder if more YRF blu-rays will get problems in the future? Would keep me from buying more for the exorbitant ebay prices.

I would like to buy Saiyaara on BD as well. Hopefully in ATMOS 4K. I know the market is completely gone now. I ordered Pathaan but its region locked. YRF need to do something about their physical media. Atleast the companies releasing them should make them region free

I just watched War 2 in IMAX and it looked AMAZING. The movie is beautifully lit and has some gorgeous cinematography. I think a lot of the criticism about the VFX is unwarranted. The action sequences were fine for the most part.
It's a shame the film is universally panned, as it was wildly entertaining. I wonder if that makes a Blu-ray copy overseas even less of a possibility. Tiger 3 and Pathaan were released in Japan... We'll see. |
