Japan The Studio Ghibli (JP) Discussion Thread

Hello Everyone! Welcome to the thread for discussing the Japanese releases of Studio Ghibli's films. Here is the link to the previous thread:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=168643

Most pictures can be clicked which opens a new blu-ray.com window for the movie's page.

Where to Buy:
[Show spoiler]
Amazon Japan - http://www.amazon.co.jp

- Pros: Cheapest
Decent Shipping Speeds
Good Customer Service
Good for buying bulk
Don‘t need to be there to sign for the package (International Express) (I left a note on the door with my signature)

- Cons: Not good when buying 1 movie at a time due to their bad packaging for singular items.

CDJapan - http://www.cdjapan.co.jp

- Pros: Can have extremely fast & cheap shipping speeds (For me the fastest shipping option is cheaper than Amazon’s only option)
Good when buying 1 or 2 movies at a time
When Purchasing from this site you gain points that can be applied for discounts on future purchases
Sometimes you can receive first press bonus items for free

- Cons: Most Expensive
Signatures Required for the good shipping options

YesAsia - http://yesasia.com

- Pros: 2nd Most Expensive when using their free shipping
Free International Shipping (Included in Price)
You can get a free Studio Ghibli Item with your purchase and a free mini capsule toy (with every 2 eligible items)
YesAsia guarantees that you won't have to pay any VAT in the UK and Germany.

- Cons: Some people have received their items in poor shape.

- Shipping: Their free shipping varies in speed for some people.

Customs:

Before you buy please contact or research your relevant government agencies for Customs information. It can be a huge surprise when you end up with a huge bill of charges. From my experience Blu-Ray movies do not have customs charges for residents in the United States (based on my experience with DHL and Fedex).

More countries will be added in the future

Studio Ghibli Releases (Comparisons)

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=198117

FAQ
[Show spoiler]
Q: When are Studio Ghibli’s films released on blu-ray?
A: They are usually released in July and December but sometimes they are released in June and November.

Q: When do we find out which films are being released?
A: Usually we get the announcement 3-4 months before they are released.

Q: Which films are coming next?
A: All completed films have been released. Hayao Miyazaki's next film is slated be released in 3-4 years.

Q: Will I be charged with customs fees when I purchase these?
A: You most likely will and should contact your customs agency ahead of time to find out what the fees are.

Q: What is the best place to buy these from?
A: See the “Where to Buy” section to see what best fits your needs.

Q: When will these films be released on Blu-Ray in other countries?
A: These films are usually released on Blu-Ray in other countries after they are released in Japan.

Q: What is included with the movie?
A: There is always a pamphlet with movie posters, list of bonus features, features, and other relevant information. You also get a feedback card (Japanese Residents only), and some printed advertisements.

Q: Are there “commercials” before the movie starts?
A: Besides for Studio Ghibli’s 10 second long short, there are no “commercials” before you reach the menu.

Q: I can’t find certain audio or subtitle options, can you help?
A: Some releases do not have certain audio options (E.g. Grave of the Fireflies does not have English). Some have the options in the bonus features (Ponyo and Castle in the Sky).

Q: How do I get the English audio and English subtitles on Laputa: Castle in the Sky?
A: Thanks to CatBus, here is a detailed explanation: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=4951

Q: Are the subtitles, “dubtitles”?
A: No (From what I have seen)

This thread is no longer updated often due to no new releases. If you want anything added and/or changed please PM me.

So, are we using this thread for all future posts? Cool! Great work SleepyHobo!

I don't agree with the fact that the shipping is VERY slow with Yesasia's free shipping option. I live in Sweden and got Kurenai no Buta in less than a week. That's pretty fast. I've bought all my films from Yesasia with the exception of Kokuriko Zaka Kara, and they've all turned up in 3 days to 2 weeks time. I guess it comes down to what you think of as "slow" shipping. I mean, it's FREE after all.

Please let me provide you with better mock-ups than those for the films not yet released yet. Those were made very fast and quite sloppily so. I'm doing Kaze Tachinu as well.

Yup. We'll be using this thread from now on!

I updated the YesAsia Shipping part. Thanks for your input.

Sweet! Thanks. If you post them while I'm sleeping then I'll update the thread when I get back on.

Oh yeah, my Porco Rosso DID arrive yesterday, but I couldn't find the time to pick it up. I got my shipping notice last tuesday, so that took it less than a week to get here from YesAsia.

EDIT: To moderator. To get a free capsule toy from YesAsia, you have to buy two or more applicable items, not just one.

I live in Germany and every time i buy somethin from yesasia it takes at least three weeks. I'm kinda jealous that you already received your copy of Porco Rosso and i probably have to wait another two weeks..

It's worth noting a number of us have had items turn up from YA in poor shape. Some people might be disappointed if it turns out like that for them.

Can someone post some pictures of these 'reversible' Japanese original covers that the Australian releases apparantly have? Really interested to see what they look like

No problem mate. You should be able to find most of the artwork on Google if you go for large size in the search.

$65.00 + $41.00 S&H. Not cheap, but not unreasonable either considering its rarity.

They shipped so fast from AMZ.jp. Heavily considering pulling the trigger on Coquelicot, Arrietty, Howl's and Ponyo.
