Default Maybe might buy an Apple TV 4th Gen but have a huge UV collection

I might buy an Apple TV 4th Gen but I have a UV collection of around 320 UV movies and I have around 50 iTunes movies. However I now just prefer the Apple ecosystem over the UV ecosystem. I own an iPhone as well. Vudu is practically useless on my Xbox One due to issues/interface and the only alternative to Vudu on my Xbox One is Cinema Now for my UV collection which I find a little better than Vudu on my Xbox One but still stutters in my UV movies once in a while but not as much as it did in Vudu on my Xbox One and Cinema Now does not show about 5% of my UV collection. Also it took a few hours for Bad Boys I and II to show up in my Cinema Now Library after redeeming those UV codes through Vudu. I have a Roku 3 and used it back when I owned a TV but it displays a poor contrast image on my monitor (my monitor is my TV currently).

Umm, is there a question in there, somewhere in that wall of text?

I happily own the new Apple TV and have a large Vudu library.

I would love a native Vudu app but so far there is none.
I read on a thread in Macrumors that Vudu said they will (or have) submitted an App to Apple but that was weeks ago.

Sadly, there is little incentive for them. They would have to pay the Apple tax if they allowed purchases and the current iPad app wouldn't work (not HD or multi-channel).

I'm holding out hope but doubt we will see anything soon.

I just wanted to know that if it's worth buying an Apple TV (4th Gen) if I'm not having a good experience with UV even if my UV collection is much larger than my iTunes collection?

Yes, it's worth it. I made the switch to Apple TV 4th gen over the holidays and now I buy everything digital with Apple TV in mind.

Of course, I still redeem my UV codes too, since I have Vudu on my smart TV, and it's fairly solid. The quality of Vudu on my TV is great, but I'd say most, if not all, of the movies have a split second of sound dropout partway through and then the sound gets out of sync. Then I have to pause it, so the sound goes back into sync.

If I watch Vudu on my PS3, it looks pretty lousy. The image is too dark and the resolution isn't as stable. But it doesn't have the sync problem. Still, I prefer the sync issue on the smart TV app to the lower quality PS3 app.

With Apple TV, the quality is solid, it has no sync issues and many of my iTunes copies include extras. I think I prefer the Netflix app on my smart TV (it does UHD and has fewer issues), but I can live with the Apple TV version too. The overall quality of everything on the Apple TV is better than my smart TV, and it's more responsive. Definitely a great buy.

Personally, if I was in your situation I wouldnt buy an Apple TV 4th Gen. The reason being is that you only have 50 iTunes movies in which case I'd consider iTunes as my secondary movie streaming service, compared with 300+ VUDU titles.

Just hang tight (for God knows how long) for an official VUDU streaming app on the Apple TV before buying one.

Im an iTunes only guy so dont have any issues streaming my movies/shows to any of my Apple devices, I own an Apple TV 3rd Gen, iPhone, iPad, and a Macbook Pro

He prefers the Apple ecosystem, though. I also have 300+ UV titles, and switched to iTunes as my preferred provider because I prefer that ecosystem. Like you, I have Apple TV (4th gen), iPhone, iPad and a MacBook Pro. I'm Apple all the way. If he's anything like us, it would make sense to switch.

Why do so many people make the mistake of thinking the only way to make money is to sell stuff directly in an app?

If they only have the app be a viewer, and restrict the buying to their website, then they don't have to pay "Apple tax"

The incentive is that they can then say "if you buy from us, you can play them on your Apple TV" which might actually increase sales.

Yeah, that's exactly how the Vudu app works on the iPhone/iPad. The only lame thing is not being able to view them in HD/HDX on those Apple devices. They couldn't restrict that on Apple TV or it would be a pointless app.

That's actually what I hate about VUDU, they pull the same crap when I watch in a web browser on my computer. It's all in SD. Where exactly do they expect me to watch the HDX version, if even on my computer I can't?

100% agree. It's like they're pointing you in a very specific direction where to watch it. By either picking up a streaming set top device that supports Vudu or a smart TV with it pre-installed. No other way to watch in HD, unless you use a newer android phone/tablet. indeed.

I received the new Apple TV this past Christmas and let's just say, I now spend more money buying movies and collecting digital codes for my iTunes library.

I love it. More than worth it, in my opinion, especially since you like the ecosystem.

Saw this on the Vudu forums:

Really hope we see that iOS update for HD and AirPlay sooner rather than later, particularly if that's still combined with actual downloading of titles too. It'd finally give me a device that I could actually replace my venerable PlayStation 3 with!

This all comes down to the concept of friction. Which store is a customer more likely to rent or buy movies from, the one that requires only a single button press on the remote that you already have in your hand, or the one that requires you to boot up your computer, log in, and then rent/buy the movie?

Also, let's be honest: Most people use Vudu to play digital copies that came with physical discs or were traded or acquired for a few dollars on the gray market for digital codes. Catering to these customers by offering a playback-only app is obviously not a high priority for Vudu since they don't make any money from them.

With the iTunes HD digital copy, I can watch it in HD on my tablet, phone, and computer and I can even watch it in HD offline without an Internet connection. If you buy an HDX copy from Vudu, good luck trying to watch it in HD on a tablet, phone, or offline.

I started my digital collection with Flixster/Vudu I have over 160+ movies and a friend of mine got me an Apple TV a few years back and now I'm slowly converting into fully itunes movies with 95+. I love the simplicity of accessing my movies, plus I family share with my best friend so we have a ton of movies between us that we can easily stream. We can even download each other's movies for offline viewing in HD

So you're re-buying all the titles on iTunes that you previously bought on Flixster/Vudu?
