The Disney Vault is the practice used by Disney to put home media releases of their animated classics out of print. Each Disney film is available for purchase for a limited amount of time, after which it is put back "in the vault" and this also means digital copies are not available as well. What are peoples opinions?

Like what? The only Disney animated feature never given a home video release is Music Land, a mash-up of the most popular sequences from Make Mine Music and Melody Time. Walt released it in the 50's, it's so obscure, it doesn't even have an imdb page last time I checked. I don't know if this counts, but then you also have the Irwin Kostal 1982 version of Fantasia. Everything else has been released in one form or another, even Song of the South on Japanese laserdisc.

There will always be people who don't have them and want them. Obviou$ly, the $y$tem $till work$ or they'd $hut it down
![]() Haha no, once you have it in your library, it stays. Going in the vault just means it won't be available to purchase from retail or digital stores. |

No...the OP worded what he said awkwardly - he meant once a title was vaulted, you could also no longer buy it on iTuens, DMA, Vudu, etc. Your digital copies are fine, they aren't going anywhere, and in fact when titles come back to market, you typically get the new bonus features for free if you already own the digital copy, and two weeks out before the physical version to boot.

See also Lucas, Spielberg (at least for a while with E.T.), the Bond films and others over the years (Intrada, Shout Factory, etc.). Shoot, limiting availability of product creates intense buyer's urgency, a common sales tactic. If the Mouse vaulted everything, I'd understand the gripes, but we're really only talking about less than 1/5th of their feature animation library, and who doesn't own those titles already by this point?

As others have said, it just encourages piracy. If Disney doesn't want to sell you their films, people will find them other ways. It also encourages Ebay/Amazon scalpers. Last edited by mar3o; 08-16-2017 at 10:52 PM. |

The strategy may make Disney and scalpers more money, but for average consumers it sucks. I see no benefit in it to regular joes & janes. Screw the vault system.
EDIT: Disney also needs to stop scrubbing grain on their animated releases. |
