Andrew Neyman is an ambitious young jazz drummer, single-minded in his pursuit to rise to the top of his elite east coast music conservatory. Plagued by the failed writing career of his father, Andrew hungers day and night to become one of the greats. Terence Fletcher, an instructor equally known for his teaching talents as for his terrifying methods, leads the top jazz ensemble in the school. Fletcher discovers Andrew and transfers the aspiring drummer into his band, forever changing the young man's life. Andrew's passion to achieve perfection quickly spirals into obsession, as his ruthless teacher continues to push him to the brink of both his ability-and his sanity.

Just saw it last night. Terrific film. What an intense final scene. J.K. Simmons better get a Best Supporting Actor nod(if not the award itself).

That finale had me sweating, on the edge of my seat, and grinning from ear to ear. Definitely one of the best films of 2014. Day 1 purchase!

I didn't even know about this movie until today. This looks good! Man, JK Simmons seems like a real bastard of a teacher in this. Funny enough, my 9 year old son just started taking drum lessons this year and we bought him a new drum kit for Christmas, so it's cool to see a movie like this come out at this time.

I saw Whiplash on Sunday morning in New Haven, CT...I put it in my top 10 for 2014!

What's great about the character is that while he is a hardass and exceedingly cruel both verbally and physically toward his students(think Sgt. Hartman from Full Metal Jacket), you can see where he's coming from in his approach. The ending can definitely be interpreted multiple ways. For some, it'll be a moment of triumph. For others, there may be an element of sadness to it.

Since so many have already seen the film, can anyone tell me if they think it may be too inappropriate for a 9 year old boy? My son is somewhat mature for his age, but I wouldn't want to introduce a story to him that may be too harsh for him to take in, especially considering he's just starting out with playing drums and I wouldn't want him getting discouraged by something he sees in the film. I don't expect it to be the Karate Kid of drumming, but I guess what I'm looking to find out is if this story has an inspiring postive element to it. Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

If you consider someone willing to live a pretty dysfunctional life and sacrifice everything to become a music legend, then yeah, you could consider it inspirational.

Hmmm, maybe I'll just have to check this one out on my own first, without my son. I wouldn't want him feeling confused or conflicted by the tone of the subject matter. I've let him watch some fairly dark stuff for a kid before, but at this stage in his life with his drum lessons and all, I'd rather keep it positive and encouraging. Looks like he'll just have to stick with Jack Black's School of Rock for now.
