Can someone please tell me what special features are listed on the UK/StudioCanal version of this? Is it the same as the US release?

^Waiting to hear on the same, there doesn't seem to be any official announcement. The US disc is nicely stacked with a commentary and lengthy featurettes.

I think the best thing you can do is pickup the Dutch version. There is a documentary on it with Michael Dudok De Wit about making the movie etc. The sleeve is also pretty awesome.

I've seen bits of the documentary when it was broadcast on NPO2 and iirc there were bits in French, Dutch and other languages, so for UK people it's basically a useless special feature without English subtitles, which I assume it doesn't have.

Yup, me too. Almost makes up for all the super low price Amazon bargains I missed recently... LOL

It'll be interesting to see how this version compares with extra features etc.

- Documentary: het verlangen van Michael Dudok de Wit
- 2 short movies: "Father & Daughter" & "The Aroma of Tea"

With the press release listing "The Secrets of the Red Turtle featurette" the only bonus on the disc, looks like the UK release is going to be light on extras.

Yup, and it'll probably be about £12.50 at its cheapest after that, if the other Ghibli titles are anything to go by (a tenner if you're lucky). Keeping my pre-order!

Lucky! I assume you have Prime? I reckon mine will arrive this time next week with a large dent due to flimsy packaging...I tend not to pre-order with Amazon these days unless it's a bargain.

Arrived this morning so I watched it earlier tonight. A lovely film, kind of a Ghibli take on "Cast Away". I really enjoyed it, has beautiful animation and great sound design. By the way, no issues with playback of the film or extra.
Only one extra, a 17m02s Wild Side feature "Secrets of the Red Turtle: From the drawing to the film by Michael Dudok de Wit" in French with English subtitles (which can be disabled).

Was an easy decision to pick it up at the £8 pre-order price, but at current price if you can play region A locked discs, the US disc is probably a better option, much more extra content;
Quote:
  • Audio Commentary: Writer/Director Michaël Dudok de Wit shares his thoughts on the film, much of which is explored in the next supplement but that opens up the film's story, structure, and construction; the challenges of the filmmaking process; feedback and help; visual structures and cues; an idea to insert dialogue into a key moment; and plenty more.
  • The Birth of The Red Turtle (1080p, 56:36): An in-depth exploration of the film's creation, exploring original concepts, character and environment designs, inspirations, themes in the film, design and structural specifics, human acting, and more. The piece offers a treasure trove of concept art in addition to Michaël Dudok de Wit's commentary.
  • The Secrets of The Red Turtle (1080p, 17:45): Michaël Dudok de Wit demonstrates the artistic secrets behind his creations as he draws a number of elements from the film.
  • The Red Turtle at AFI Fest Q&A (1080p, 20:47): Michaël Dudok de Wit speaks with AFI Associate Programmer Mike Doughtery and the audience about the film, including collaboration with Studio Ghibli, the film's story and themes, human performances without the use of language, music, metaphors, and more.
  • Theatrical Trailer (1080p, 1:59).
  • Previews (1080p): Additional Sony titles.
You could possibly get another region B release, but due to extras being in French etc. you'd have to find one that includes English subtitles. There's an Australian release in December by Madman Entertainment, I'm not sure what extras it includes but they released a DVD in July with the following features, so I imagine they'll be carried over;
Quote:
  • French TV Spot
  • English Trailer
  • Michael Dudok de Wit's shorts
    - Father and Daughter
    - The Aroma of Tea
    - The Monk and the Fish
  • The Birth of a Turtle
  • Drawing Lesson by Michael Dudok de Wit: The Secrets of The Red Turtle

Same here - mine is due today (so much for Prime, LOL), at £8, it was a bargain, but (as you've highlighted) rubbish in terms of extras.

Did yours come with a slip?

My copy just arrived, with slip. Not bad for eight quid.

My first Ghibli BD. I swore down I wouldn't upgrade my DVDs after importing every single one from Japan for around fifty quid a pop. This'll make me start.

Mine just arrived from Amazon. Still dunno how they almost always manage to damage slipcovers in the warehouse. The pickers must kick 'em about a bit before sending them, just for a bit of fun.

Still, can't complain for £8. The slips for my other Ghibli titles are a bit scrawny anyway (one or two were from Zavvi I think). Shame StudioCanal didn't bother adding more extras, but I'm mainly interested in the film anyway. Would've been nice to have at least one short film though! I guess the BBFC fees put them off unless it's going to be really popular (e.g. Miyazaki).
