Default Take THAT Micro$oft!

Let's not forget Director Michael Bay's statement (and others who've been suggesting this for months):

“What you don’t understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about. That is why Microsoft is handing out $100 million dollar checks to studios just embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu Ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth.”

- Michael Bay (shootfortheedit.com)

Edit: Michael posted this on his website, I think, early December. This was regarding Paramounts (Universal?) move to go HD-DVD exclusive.

My Opinion:

Maybe Warner Brothers had some insider that could corroborate this story, and realized they did NOT want downloadable content... (less $$$) Hah.

Maybe microsoft made an investment on something they thought would blossom and could make money from? It doesnt always have to be a conspiracy

The last 4 movies Michael Bay put out SUCKED. He is a director, not an expert. His statement has almost the same impact as if it came from Paris Hilton. Actually I would take her word more seriously because whatever she says, 2 million teenage girls follow.

Hopefully Warner's decision will keep digital downloads from gaining a lot of momentum. Personally, I don't see how digital downloads have a chance at this point but you never know with MS. I sure hope they fail though.

You may not like Michael Bay or even like his movies, but I bet he knows more about this business than anybody here. One thing's for sure though he is not Politically Correct in anything he says or does, and I kinda like that about him.

One last thing, check out the Box Office Reciepts for his movies. The Academy may not have any love for him but it seems the Movie-Going Public does. Do you think studio execs would rather be producing the next Michael Bay movie or the next snooze fest by George Clooney?

Let me guess you are there handing out candy to the 2 million girls. Paris Hilton is nothing more than a name, cant sing, cant act, Is good a one thing(I saw the video) Thats about it.
Pretty bad when your unauthorized movie outsells your cd release

Do you think if Paris Hilton was badmouthing HDDVD , Would anyone listen?

Are some of you born stupid or just become it? Why would you go AGAINST digital downloads? Why should digital downloads and Blu-Ray not be able to co-exist? The music industry seems to be fine with it, most people even prefer to buy a physical copy, but for the people who just want to buy a movie online and watch it without leaving their home, why should they not be allowed to do that? Even Sony is planning on incorporating movies and TV shows into the PSN store.

Uh, probably born that way.

I just meant I don't want that to be the main distribution method for movies. If they want to offer some scaled down version much like a rental or whatever, that's fine. But, comments from people seem to indicate they want the digital downloads to be the main method of delivering movies and I don't think that's a good idea.

New poster...uhh ohh
well lets just say, wal-mart has officially dropped them, If Wal-Mart cant sell them well I guess the consumer doesnt want it as much as the dvd copy. I would rather have the dvd vs digital as computers do crash

I don't think digital downloads will ever be the main method of distribution for a LONG time. I still prefer to buy a physical copy of movies (at present anyways).

I should apologize for that stupid comment also.

No problem. I was looking for the comment by Graffeo where he said the Warner decision was a blow to HD DVD but that it might be too late for hi-def media already since digital downloads might be what wins out or something to that effect. That's the type thing I'm worried about. I'm still looking for the link to that though...

Edit: Actually, maybe I have the wrong name and that's why I'm having trouble finding the quote...still looking...

Edit 2: I think I'm searching for the wrong guy and there are so many Warner and related threads, I'm not sure I'll be able to find the link I'm looking for. In any case, that was the type of thing I was worried about. Digital downloads replacing HDM as the main method of purchasing movies.

It America, Free enterprise....you wanna offer 15 ways to obtain a movie, so be it, but the consumer has to want to purchase it for it to worth a companies time.

Digital downloads are great for travelers, people on the go;, just as VOD or pay per view, they sell, yet at a very small scale compared to DVD.

We are a country of material things, we want want want and want things of material value,Persay would you want to invest 600.00 in Digital downlods 600.00 in DVD/BD's? Of course the DVDs, they have value, resale, the digital downloads are wortless as far as resale and they are "material"

Its the renting/owning a house scenario , 15 years later, whos ahead, the renter or the owner?

Excellent analogy. I fully agree. A movie in the hand is better than two in the hard drive.

15 years later, do you think that hard drive still works or heck, by then you would have been through 3-4 computers

You can't really predict how things will be 15 years from now. For example, you can use digital downloads as a rental only service a la XBox Live where the movie expires after X amount of days. By doing that you can eliminate the middleman (i.e. Blockbuster) when renting movies.

And who says the movies have to be stored in your computer once and only once? If we look at Steam (www.steampowered.com) you can install the program and re-download games you've purchased as many times as you want provided that you're logged into your account.

Obviously the kind of internet speeds we get right now won't be able to support this kind of service without long wait times, but maybe in the FUTURE it'll be a viable alternative.
