Arrow Arnold Schwarzenegger to star in comedy "Why We’re Killing Gunther"

Quote:
'SNL's' Taran Killam wrote the script and will make his directorial debut with the ensemble comedy.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is heading back into comedy territory.

The action star will star in Why We’re Killing Gunther, an action comedy that will be directed by Saturday Night Live star Taran Killam, making his directorial debut.

Killam, who also wrote the script, will also star in the ensemble along with his wife, actress Cobie Smulders, SNL’s Bobby Moynihan, Paul Brittain (Hotel Transylvania 2), Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley), Randall Park (The Interview) and Ryan Gaul (Identity Thief).

Kim Leadford, Killam, Ash Sarohia and Steve Squillante will produce while StarStream Media will finance.

MadRiver Pictures will introduce the film to international buyers at the Cannes International Film Festival, with UTA representing the North American rights.

The story tells of a group of eccentric international assassins who become fed up with Gunther, the world's greatest hitman who also happens to be an arrogant show-off, and decide to kill him. Their master plan, however, quickly turns into a series of embarrassing encounters as Gunther always appears one step ahead.

A June start date is being eyed.

I really like the sound of this!

Sounds like True Lies territory. I like True Lies.

Not sure about the residual SNL affect. In recent times, it's been terribly unfunny. If they're going with that type of humour, then .

Yeah that's what aspect I am really liking, the world class hitman. Definitely reminds me of True Lies. I agree though that recent SNL forced humour/ cheap gags I don't find funny. We will have to wait and see how it pans out.

What may work in this film's favour is a solid story and a firm plot, instead of that Apatow / SNL trope of meandering, improvised comedy - where characters stand around trying to tell jokes instead being funny in the way they behave - that overstays its welcome. The odd flat joke here or there is to be expected, but I think with Arnie's predilection for one-liners, etc., I can't see them going too far into improvised or similar territory.

I've never seen any Arnold Schwarzenegger comedies but I just can't imagine him as a comedy actor. I just think of him too much as an action star.

There is a fair amount of comedy in his action movies.

Yeah definitely to be expected, one liners and making fun of his action film career. I just hope they don't go too far with it, ie putting it in your face. At least there will be action, I can definitely see some scenes play out like True Lies. Very surprised it goes into production so early though, never expected a June production date. That means 478 will be his film for this year and Why we're killing Gunther for 2017 and possibly a Terminator sequel and Predator sequel for 2018.

"My new film is a blend of action und comedy, it's called 'McBain, let's get silly!'"

Arnie is a great cheesy comedy guy; a lot of his action movies are intentionally and sometimes unintentionally hilarious, like Commando, so many one liners!

Arnold's deadpan humor in the Terminator movies can be hilarious IMO, so I can see him being able to pull off a comedy again. Hopefully he also has that new Terminator in the works soon.
