Criterion Classic Hitchcock (1934-1940)

I didn't see this mentioned before in any thread.

This was discussed in the Criterion thread.

At least this set only slights you on Foreign Correspondent with a single disc edition...

There is also another, "Rock Box" set (nevermind, I see there's a thread about it):

I was kind of disappointed to learn that there was nothing to this set but a cardboard cover. I was hoping that it would differentiate itself more from the original releases.

How much are they? Anyone know? If it's like $60-75 at Costco it would easily be worth it - even for those of us that just want the box.

Is it a sturdy cardboard "slipbox" that houses the plastic cases. Likewise, is it 4 Scanovo cases thick, or do they slim it down? I don't need any "clever" packaging, but something simple/sturdy like what houses the Yojimbo/Sanjuro set is perfect for me - if that's what it is. I have the "digipack" of Foreign Correspondent, so I'd be perfectly OK ditching that one and switching out the other releases as well to get this. But only if the price is reasonable, if it's $100+ forget about it.

There is nothing "missing" on the single blu-ray, is there? I just think of the 2 DVD's as coasters.

"Classic Hitchcock" has the single-disc re-release of "Foreign Correspondent" and "The Rock Box" has a single-disc version of "A Hard Day's Night," which is not available anywhere else.

To answer your questions:

Yes, it's a sturdy cardboard slip box.
Yes, it's 4 Scanavo cases thick.
I'm not certain if the content is different on the "Foreign Correspondent" Blu-Ray (I don't have the digipack with the 2 DVDs), but I wouldn't think there'd be a difference.
The "Rock Box" is constructed in an identical fashion. Some have complained that the "Monterey Pop" is only the single-disc version, but I bought the "Jimi & Otis at Monterey" disc separately, put them both in a 2-disc Scanavo case and slid it into the "Rock Box" packaging. There's also no big booklet with "A Hard Day's Night" as there was with the digipack (no deal-killer there for me at all).
It's $59.99 for the Hitchcock box, and the same price for the "Rock Box".

Hope that helps.

Is the disc art different? Here's the original:

I'm asking because they changed it for the single disc re-release of Throne of Blood. Original:

Single disc re-release:

I'll have to check and get back to you on that when I get home (I'm at work now...slow day before the holiday). BTW, your "Cage in Vampire's Kiss" avatar is hilarious.

It's virtually identical, but without the word "Blu-Ray", since there are no other discs to need to distinguish it from.

Does anyone have photos of the single-disc version of A HARD DAY'S NIGHT? I hate the cardboard case multi-disc versions. I've already replaced my TESS and FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT discs with plastic case versions (still need to get around to selling the old ones). I'd be tempted to replace A HARD DAY'S NIGHT as well.

I'll be looking for the slipcases on eBay. I already have the movies.

But the Rock set appears to include an exclusive plastic case BD-only version of A HARD DAY'S NIGHT, you won't be able to fit your existing multi-format cardboard case version in the slipcase...

I like the Hitchcock box. I own 3 of the 4 and I'm about to buy The 39 Steps to finish off the Hitch Criterions so far. Does Criterion sell the box itself?

I don't care if they fit. I just want the slip to put away and know that I have it.

Be kind. We're all entitled to collect as we wish. I'll bet some people think I'm crazy for caring enough about the plastic case versions to rebuy TESS and FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT.

Yup, there are people who roll their eyes at the thought of buying black-and-white movies. Hell, there are people who roll their eyes at the thought of buying movies period.
