Default DisneyNature's Penguins (April 2019)

DisneyNature's latest docu-animal feature is all about penguins and specifically about an Adélie penguin named Steve. A rather simple coming of age story of him becoming a father to two chicks and how they endure and grow up in brutal snow and ice of the Antarctic. Cinematography is top notch and narration by Ed Helms is both informative and enough humor to cater to the kids, although at times he could have dialed it down a bit. I quite enjoyed this, but unlike say 'Born in China' which had the freedom to depict varied other species and animals, there's only so much you can learn and watch Adelie penguins in action and at only 76 minutes it's the right running time. I don't want to spoll to much of the story, but there's a sequence with a lion seal that might put some young kids on edge, "I" was quite unnerved by it - but hey it's G-rated.

Recommended!

Surprised there wasn't a thread for this already. I'm really looking forward to checking it out. I see it's in a few (real) IMAX theaters here locally, so I'll probably go that route.

yeah, did an advanced search for this but nothing turned up - and I had to specifically run over to AMC Tyson's since they just reopened their IMAX theater today for this and 'Hellboy' in IMAX-laser/12-channel sound - the imagery for 'Penguins' in laser projection was breathtaking and the 12 channel mix was good (but nowhere as evocative and beautiful as 'Born In China' sound design)

Thumbs up

My GF (who found the trailer super-cute) and I will probably see it this week, in Imax via AMC A-List.

Disney

Saw it. Cute and amusing, but not as good as March of the Penguins. It's a Disney-fied version of nature.

Sucks we couldn't see it in Imax. Penguins has the matinée shows, but the evening Imax shows are Curse of La Llorona.

It was okay, I enjoyed Born in China more. Feels like Disney might be killing off the Disneynature label. No teaser for a 2020 film. They skipped 2018 entirely, pulling Dolphins just weeks before release (it was released in France as "Disneynature Blue"). I always looked forward to their Earth Day releases, but this feels like the last one.

^ Sucks if it's true. It seems like this is the type of thing that could benefit a lot from A-List. But, possibly headed for Disney+.

I just read that Dolphins is now scheduled for a November 12, 2019 debut on Disney+. They have corrected the narrative technical difficulties (which is the reason why Disney pulled the feature from theaters) by replacing Owen Wilson with Natalie Portman. The Owen Wilson audio has been permanently scrapped.

I hope Disney will eventually release Dolphins (now renamed: Dolphin Reef) on home media so we can add it to our DisneyNature collection. It would feel incomplete without it next to the other DisneyNature features on Blu-ray.

Lastly, I'm still hoping all 11 documentaries (Earth, The Crimson Wing: The Mystery Of The Flamingos, Oceans, Wings Of Life, African Cats, Chimpanzee, Bears, Monkey Kingdom, Born In China, Penguins and Dolphin Reef) will receive a 4K UHD release sometime in the near future.

Take a look on Google Play. There's a few Disneynature movies that were not released to Blu-Ray. However, I think these were made from additional footage captured during the production of Born in China. There's 3 titles:
  • Ghosts of the Mountains
  • Expedition China
  • Growing Up Wild

Looks like Growing Up Wild was cobbled together from additional footage from African Cats, Chimpanzee, and Bears.

I wish they had cast Quail instead of penguins. Quails aren’t represented enough in film.
