Beware any English speaker who buys this- I can't figure out how to turn them off anyhow...

Are there some players (Oppo) that can un-force them?

I was looking at buying this (I'm UK based) - did you work out a way to remove subtitles?

Very late reply but now that I've got an Oppo which can move subtitles right down out of frame, I'll be grabbing my copy of Die Vier Federn when I'm in the UK and bringing it back to see if I can literally bully the subs out of the picture.

On the Xbox, I was able to choose the English Audio and no subtitles while the studio logos were showing at the beginning, fast forward, and watch the movie sans German subtitles.
