Default Samsung MU8000 Series

This appears to be the 2017 replacement to the very popular 2016 KS8000 series, and while it has some pretty great improvements (cable management, overall design, half the input lag) the usable length of the power cable itself is a foot and a half.

Seriously.

Gonna try to purchase an extension cable tomorrow morning so I can actually use the dang thing.

Also it apparently doesn't get as bright as the KS8000 so it might be a downgrade to some. I'll be using it as a computer monitor (had a 55" KS850D but it broke and this is the replacement) at 100-nit SDR, so peak brightness is meaningless for my use case.

Picked this set up at a fantastic price and have been very happy with it when watching blu-rays and gaming on my PS4 Pro. But I'm finding that HDR content is quite dim without turning the Dynamic Contrast to either low or high. Brightness is passable on films like ZDT and Starship Troopers with all enhancements off (though still improved by Dynamic Contrast) but it was only when I compared blu-ray and streaming versions of Westworld to the 4K disc that I realized just how dim HDR content is with no enhancements on my MU8000.

Did some digging and I found this on AVSForum regarding an older Samsung model:

Quote:
Dynamic Contrast: This applies special post-processing to increase contrast of the image. This behaves very differently when receiving SDR vs. HDR content. For SDR content, it is recommended that you set this to Off or Low, as higher values will cause loss of definition in dark/bright areas. For HDR content, Dynamic Contrast will make the image brighter. For HDR, recommend values are Low or Medium; Off will likely make the image too dark, while High may make the image too bright.
Could this advice also apply to the MU8000? Any other owners, or just people familiar with Samsung 4K tv's, able to give their thoughts on this?

Contacted Samsung directly about the dim HDR issue and received this reply:

Quote:
Thank you for contacting Samsung.

I have gone through your email and I see that you would like to know whether content is dim on the TV when you enables HDR on the TV. I understand your requirement and I will help you with the information.

I have checked the available resources and I see that, it is a normal operation that HDR content is dim when you enable the HDR on the TV. You can turn the Contract Enhancer to high or low to enhance the picture quality. It is just a normal operation, it is needed to calibrate your TV.
Not sure how reputable his 'available resources' are but it does indeed sound as if you're supposed to turn Contrast Enhancer on when playing HDR content. Kind of weird it doesn't just automatically turn on when playing HDR content. I also wonder why they don't create a separate setting for adjusting HDR brightness since Contrast Enhancer supposedly works totally differently when applied to HDR compared to SDR on these Samsungs.
