Default The Square (2017)

http://theplaylist.net/elisabeth-mos...uare-20160514/

Quote:
Elisabeth Moss has wasted little time in putting her “Mad Men” acclaim to good use in the TV and film world. She’s lined up projects with Jane Campion, Alex Ross Perry, Walter Salles, and Ben Wheatley among others, and now she’s adding another auteur to her increasing impressive film resumé.

Moss has signed up to star in “The Square,” the next film from director Ruben Ostlund, the helmer behind the celebrated “Force Majeure.” But just because the filmmaker is working with Hollywood talent, doesn’t mean his unique storytelling voice will be muted. Indeed, this one will revolve around a museum’s attempt to drum up publicity for an altruistically themed exhibit that ends up goes over the line.

The film will co-star Danish actors Claes Bang and Christopher Laesso, as well as Marina Schiptjenko, who is a famed international gallery owner. Last we heard, the movie will “most likely” be in English, but I would assume it might be a mix given this casting. But we’ll likely know soon enough as cameras will start rolling in June. [THR]

Won this year's Palme d'Or.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...me-dor-1007577

Quote:
Sofia Coppola becomes the second woman to ever win for best director while Joaquin Phoenix and Diane Kruger earned acting honors.
The 70th annual Cannes Film Festival came to a close Sunday night with the main competition awards ceremony at the Palais des Festivals.

The Square, by Swedish writer-director Ruben Ostlund, won the top prize, the Palme d'Or. The satire, the follow-up to Ostlund's 2014 international hit Force Majeure, explores Swedish art, commerce, politics and national identity stars Claes Bang and Elisabeth Moss.

The story centers on a man who is overseeing a new art installation called The Square, a sanctuary where anyone entering it is supposed to abide by humanitarian values -- but things quickly go awry.

When he took the stage to accept his award, Ostlund led the crowd in a "scream of happiness" and told photographers to turn their cameras away from him and into the audience. He counted down, and the audience led out a massive scream. "I can direct you all now because I won this prize," he said.

Sofia Coppola became only the second woman to win the prize for best director for her film The Beguiled, starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell. Maren Ade accepted for Coppola, who was not present. She ended the speech by thanking director Jane Campion for being a role model.

The Grand Prix was awarded to 120 Beats per Minute by Robin Campillo, which follows "Eastern Boys" by mining his past as a member of AIDS activist group ACT UP in 1990s Paris.

Nicole Kidman was honored with a special prize for the festival's 70th anniversary. The actress appeared in competition projects Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Beguiled, along with the second season of Jane Campion's Top of the Lake, and the film How to Talk to Girls at Parties. Will Smith accepted the award in her absence, and a special video message from Kidman was presented.

Joaquin Phoenix was awarded the best actor prize for Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here. The actor stars as a hitman trying to save a teen prostitute.

Diane Kruger was honored with the best actress award for her work in In the Fade. Fatih Akin's courtroom and revenge drama saw the German actress doing a German-language film for the first time.

In her speech, Kruger dedicated her award to victims of terror. "Those trying to pick up the pieces and go on after having lost everything, please know you are not alone," she said.

Loveless, helmed by Russian writer-director Andrey Zvyagintsev, took the jury prize.

In a surprise twist, best screenplay was awarded to both The Killing of a Sacred Deer (written by Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou) and Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here.

The Palme d'Or for short film was given to A Gentle Night from Chinese director Qiu Yang. A special mention for short film was awarded to Teppo Airaksinen for Katto.

The Camera d’Or, given to any best first film that played in the festival regardless of section, went to Leonor Serraille for Jeune Femme (Montparnasse-Bienvenüe).

Nineteen movies screened in competition this year. The jury included president Pedro Almodovar and members Will Smith, Jessica Chastain, Fan Bingbing, Agnès Jaoui, Park Chan-wook, Maren Ade, Paolo Sorrentino and Gabriel Yared.

The premise doesn't sound like something I'd like but if it won the Palm then I guess it deserves some attention. But I'm glad I found out about this because it made me look up Force Majeure, and THAT sounds like a movie with a really interesting premise. Gonna have to try and find that if it's available via streaming.

Be warned, it has one of the most painfully awkward scenes of the current decade, you will be watching through your fingers in pure horror.

Don't worry, awkward is my middle name. It'd be my first but I don't feel like filing the paperwork.

I've just seen Östlunds Force Majeure and wow, it's an intriguing movie!
It has a small but exciting question in its core and pushes its plot around the way the protagonists are dealing with it. Would be perfect for further discussion in a sociology class.
The acting is top notch although the characters are mostly seen/observed from a distance and they can't work with their facial expressions that much. In a short role Kristofer Hivju proves his talent outside of Game of Thrones (Tormund). I can't point out much negative aspects - Östlunds movie is pretty intense at times, beautifully shot and even very funny. He masters the art of striking the right tone throughout the entire running time.
And yeah, their are a lot of painfully akward scenes!

Long story short: I'm excited to see his new movie - and even more because Elisabeth Moss is in it

Hilarious Seems to be the perfect partner for a double feature with "The Killing of a Sacred Deer"!

Oh wow, I didn't realize this was from the director of Force Majeure. That movie was absolutely amazing. I've heard people talking about The Square, but never knew what it was. Now that I know it's him + Moss...I'm totally sold. Without even seeing the trailer.

I think I was just having bad association because of the pretty poor movie, The Circle, that was released earlier this year.

Looks pretty epic and surreal. People seem torn on it in same way Holy Motors polarises, so should be a fascinating watch either way. Shane this seems to have been pushed back to late March over here in the UK.

Had the chance to see this last month and the length and the mixed reactions and apparent episodic nature of the film kind of turned me off but regret not seeing it now.

Just seen The Square at my local arthouse cinema.

Yes, it is a bit too long and not as good as Force Majeure.
But Östlunds new achievement is still highly enjoyable, hilariously funny and sometimes painfully awkward.
Östlund once again deals with his favourite (sociological) topics/experiments and functions as an observer of human interaction - how would we react in certain everyday situations?
Furthermore it features a great performance by danish actor Claes Bang and a physical frightening appearence by Terry Notary, who mainly works as a stunt performer and choreographer for big studio productions and who has easily the most memorable scene of the movie.

8/10

Finally opened here, saw it yesterday. Pretty lousy. What bugged me most is the few situations that are not at all realistic. Because the situations are so contrived they are stupid and not funny. If someone steals your phone& wallet, and you can track it, wouldn't most people report it to the police? Actually some kid in Ontario, Canada last year did track his phone to the thieves & got himself killed - so this film doesn't even take that situation to a realistic conclusion.

The big dinner scene in the poster was just dumb as well.
Overlong and stupid.

I didn't dislike it quite as much as the person above but I did find it to be pretty underwhelming. The theme the movie was getting at was interesting but I feel like the execution of it wasn't particularly great. And it did indeed feel extremely long; I don't mind long movies but this one really felt like it was dragging (unlike Blade Runner 2049 which was even longer but flew by thanks to its great pacing).

Also this is a nitpick with the marketing rather than the movie itself but I found it odd/amusing that the main character of this movie is hardly even in the American trailer lol

I like how Elizabeth Moss is the biggest name in this film, yet the poster doesn't show her or her name anywhere.

Are you talking about a certain poster? The one posted here in the thread as a picture mentions her name, right after Claes Bang. I've seen at least two other ones that also shows her name.

Well that can definitely do it. Had no idea. Thought she was a main character/lead actor.
