Dividing Classic and Modern Horror

I've had my Horror Blu-rays organized by 'Classic' and 'Modern' genres for quite awhile now, but as I sat down to re-organize a shelf last night, I noticed that I (without conscious thought) drew the dividing line at the year 1978. I guess I consider John Carpenter's Halloween to be 'Modern Horror', while movies like Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist could be grouped into 'Classic Horror' along with the Universal and Hammer Monster films.

But then, I realized that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre would be considered 'Classic' by this system, and that didn't seem quite right. And what about The Omen? Classic or Modern?

It's kind of interesting to dive in to - I thought I'd see what some people on here thought. Where would you draw the line? And how do you classify your own Horror collection?

Create a new category for horrors that aren't as good as you remember them to be and put Omen in there x

Daddy, your opinions on classic horror films keep me awake at night.

I think in your situation I would separate classic and modern by decades.

Maybe the 60's and backward to classic and the 70's onward to modern?

The drawback of course is that there are plenty of films in any decade that are definitely not classics....

With that in mind you could (on your own personal judgment) separate "classics" in one section and everything else as just "horror" and skip the "modern" category entirely.....

Usually keep all my horror in the same section. Within the horror section have on a separate shelf series of films and box sets like Halloween and keep films that deal with hauntings grouped together. Only have three in with classics The Blob(original),Jaws, and The Phantom Carriage.

I mainly grew up with 80s and onward horror and so it was probably around the time of the first Scream that I really noticed a more 'modern' style of self awareness and intentional comedy. Then with Blair Witch came the early trend for viral/found footage, etc.
