Question Value Electronics 2018 TV Shootout

OK folks I need your advice.

We've been planning our 2018 TV Shootout since early January when I attended CES. Up till a few days ago I was planning to put the TV Shootout on in early June. But now that Samsung has announced the new flagship Q9S series and it's been rumored that Sony will have the successor to the very popular Z9D, possible named the Z9F, we'll considering delaying the evaluation event till end of October.

So here's my three choices:
  • Schedule the event for early June as I originally planned
  • Reschedule the event for end of October to include the two new flagship TVs
  • Go ahead with early June TV Shootout and do a second TV Shootout at the end of October

Please vote, comment and ask questions. Also bring fellow enthusiasts here so we get a big sampling of video enthusiasts. The higher the volume of voters and comments we get will help us make the best decision.

Hmm. Gonna have to ponder this 1 over! When did Samsung announce the Q9S?

I think two events. So if Samsung/Sony doesn't provide either in October you had a nice shootout in June.

I voted June. Good chance by October we will be talking about the rumors for the 2019 models and buying the 2018s on black Friday.

Voted for the 1-2 event in early June plus end of Oct. Would like to hear your thoughts on the 2018 OLEDs ASAP. Will look forward to that Sammy/Sony flagship shootout at end of Oct., as well, I have no brand loyalty (unless Pioneer were still making TVs) and very interested to see who comes out on top of that face off.

I voted for the two-step as well. Perhaps you could condense the 2nd shootout to include just the winner(s) from the first shootout vs. the new October releases. Also, remind Samsung and Sony that you're doing them a big favor by doing this and that a little token of their gratitude would be appreciated. Hee hee ...

Hoping to see 2 shootout events…as indicated by my vote. Especially would like to see one livestreamed from your retail store which has a good ambience.

Hmm, I know a Ton of effort and work, and expense would go into holding just one of these events, so my opinion would be to hold one event, you would need to pick the date based on your best guess for maximum impact this year! Hopefully display manufacturers won't make it a habit to release new models in the second half EVERY year.

Sheesh, what a pain these guys are!

Working on all of the details of our 2018 TV Shootout with Tyler Pruitt and John Reformation at the Blue Note NYC Jazz club last night.

Oh yea and the concert (Chucho Valdés with Roy Hargrove & Roberta Gambarini) and food was also excellent!

This year's TV Shootout will be the best evaluation event and most educational experience for all who will attend or tune-into our live webcast.

I like the concept of both, or just one late, because i think Sony is going to sneak in late again.

Just in case anyone doesn't know Tyler Pruitt, here a video of his last SMPTE presentation. Tyler will also be presenting at SID and just wrote a white paper and presented at NAB in April.

Tyler is working closely with John Reformato and me on our 2018 TV Shootout evaluation event.

Robert,

Any Shootout basic info to share? Like dates, locations, etc. at this point?

Or still to early to divulge?

Can't say yet as we're still evaluating the TVs, planning the agenda, and lining up special presenters.

We're also considering waiting for the mid-year introduction TVs so we can have one event with all of the appropriate contenders.

I'm happy if you get these to battle to have comparable lineup

Samsung Q9FN
LG C8 OLED (or E8)
Sony AF8 (since 2018 panel)
Sony XF9005
Philips OLED 973 (2018 top model)
(Panasonic FZ950 would be amazing but dreams for US...)

And to match those a Oppo 203 and/or Panasonic 820 so we know which have the best HDR tonemapping from a player.

Throw in the Z9F and the outcome is already decided...

Well until something is official it doesn't exists for me I really hope sony does something cool in the fall. They are very much behind in gaming input lag, "quick" dolby vision support, sneaks with 50% low bandwidth hdmi. Sadly it will just be a new full fald I guess and no oled news.

Maybe there will also be a new OLED next to a new LCD, I guess with Sony you never know.

Not that it would matter to me anyway since I'm only interested in a successor to the Z9D.
