Not confusing at all if you read the entire post. Right at the bottom it says:
Probably all these drives are no longer manufactured, ebay is your best bet in finding one of these drives.

thanks, I say confusing because if you google this: ATAPI - iHAS124 W you found links to amazon, newegg etc... but I not sure if its the same thing, specially for the W.

For ripping my CDs I use the great, free program EAC (Exact Audio Copy)
When you install the program and set it up it tests your drive for accuracy.
You just need to put a common (popular) disc in... mint condition of course.
If your players results strays from the pack (other peoples rips)...it will let you know.

Because of this I wouldn't be searching for a discontinued drive from some re-seller who's probably going to gouge you.
Just be sure the drive you choose can be returned if it fails.

I hope this helps.

thank you, I know EAC but use XLD on mac, I love XLD and do all same thing than EAC.

about the drives, but those new from amazon and newegg are bad? I mean... the descriptions are close ATAPI etc...

what makes a good cd rom good? of course that don't fail the rips but there's any difference in the EXTRACTION quality? I mean a FLAC can sound better if it was extracted in a better cd rom, mmm I don't think, bits are bits but...

I would ask Liteon if there's a difference.
Contact the support department.

My guess is the W stands for Windows.

"...what makes a good cd rom good? ...

Accuracy.

"...of course that don't fail the rips but there's any difference in the EXTRACTION quality? .."

No.
They just need to be accurate.
And as I said if your program (like EAC) uses AccurateRip you can be assured your rip was accurate with a final report.

It's when we choose a format that the sound can become compromised. (flac is a great choice that I use)
But, It's your players DAC that has the biggest effect on sound quality (besides the speakers)

Just get a new DVD drive it will do fine. If you start running into a lot of read errors on discs that look clean, then replace the drive. These are only around $35 or so each, not that big of an investment.

When I used to rip CDs, I used Windows Media Player on my computer to rip my music. Now since CDs are becoming a thing of the past, everybody is downloading their music from the internet.

I used to do the same thing. But I'm still very "old school". I still enjoy my CD's very much.. I'll even rip various songs and put them on CD's to listen in my car at work. I guess I'll get out of that phase, I like my physical CD's. Much easier to listen to and take care of.

Me too. I still like CDs and record albums, which I have a nice collection of both. For convenience, portability purposes and to minimize storage space in my home, I've converted my entire collection to mp3s on my computer, and sync the music to my phone to play in my car using Bluetooth, listening to music when I'm just doing things out in the yard, taking a walk, etc. I prefer a good quality pair of earbuds for sound and comfort because, headphones are too big and bulky.

The W series uses a NEC chipset and is based on an old Sony design from Japan. The later Liteon F and Premium drives use a Mediatek chipset designed in Taiwan. The Premium has an improved thermal regulator compared to the F drive. For audio extraction the Mediatek based drives have a reputation for working better with problematic discs. Also the NEC chipset also has a read offset of 48 samples vs the 6 of the Mediatek.

If you want to buy a standard half hight drive in current production go ahead and get the LiteOn Premium or the Plextor PX-891SAF-Plus. They are the same drive, with slightly different firmware and are an improvement over the W series.

Use either of these drives with dbpoweramp or XLD to rip your music to FLAC and you will get excellent results! I would avoid EAC since it does not detect pre-emphasis flags from the subchannels.
