I watched the blu-ray tonight and I must warn all of you... well, I guess I'm the only die-hard fan of Peter Hyams work, stupid enough to buy this horrible movie on blu-ray... but anyway... this blu-ray release is weak... you're warned! (as weak as the movie )

PQ is just slightly better than the DVD and I REALLY mean "slightly"! Everyone else would speak about it as an upscale. But I'm in a good mood
(some shots clearly look better than others)

The CGI are well-known to really look ugly, now the good thing is that the PQ is also so weak that the CGI didn't jump out at me anymore

And have you watched the HD trailer of 2005? Wondering how the PQ compares to it? since if i remember correctly it blew the DVD away.

Count me as one of the few fans of this film. Yes, the Nintendo-level CGI backgrounds are mind-numbingly fake-looking and the "science" in the film is something 2nd Graders would sneer at but if you're willing to overlook these things you've got 90 minutes of pure popcorn entertainment. Personally I find the butterfly effect theory fascinating so I guess this is what's mostly making me a fan of the film. Sadly I don't realistically expect Warner Bros. to release a Blu-ray version in Region 1.

BTW, I wonder what went so horribly wrong with this film. Peter Hyams is no hack so what's the deal here?

Hyams kind of struck out with some of his later-career movies, but this was a production sabotaged by a bad script that was worked on by dozens of writers and Franchise Pictures having running out of money (remember these were the same people who made Battlefield Earth!). They also had horrible floods when the film was shooting and it really made for a rough shoot on top of it.

Still I imported this BD and it's a really odd transfer -- IMO it's not an upscale. The problem seems to be the source print, which looks like it's two or three generations removed from the original negative, with overly hot contrast levels. The Warner DVD looks, color wise, much more stable. Very strange, though it's fairly inexpensive (shipping costs from Japan notwithstanding).

Yeah, I like this one. I never thought it would get a Blu-ray release, it didn't even get a cinema release in the UK. I have the DVD (Amazon were almost giving it away at one time). The effects are a bit odd, early on in the film they're terrible, like some unfinished tests, but as the film goes on, & the creatures start taking over the world they're very good, as if the special effects budget ran out before they could do the early stuff.

I don't give a crap what any of you say. Me and my best friend love this movie. I think it is entertaining and good. If i was rich, i would fix this movie for it's issues. Finish the effects, fix the sound effects and get Alan Silvestri to score it. If any scenes where cut cause of no budget for effects that was required before the bankruptcy happened, i would include them-fixed them-and restore them back in.

I wish Warner Bros. would release this on blu-ray.
There are rich people out there, i wish they would help get this movie a finish treatment it so well deserves.

Every time i play the song of the same name (close to it) by Duran Duran i think of this movie.

This is a very good movie! My best friend even agrees with me. Yea, the CGI wasn't able to be completed and the surround sound could have been fixed...but in all...this movie is very well done for the story, the acting, etc. I wish Warner Bros. and Peter Hyams would have been given a grant to go in and fix (for the CGI and surround sound) this film and give it a proper bluray release! I'm so glad that i own this movie on dvd and the soundtrack on cd too.

Yes, I fully agree. You don't look at this film and judge it by the effects that were used then. You look at the bloody STORY and the frigg'n awesome Sci Fi theme that is dealt with. THAT is what you appreciate about this movie

I've read the Ray Bradbury short story that this is based upon, and I remember at the end my breath just being taken away. Most effective!
