Default Untitled Bass Reeves Biopic - Chloé Zhao

Quote:
Amazon Studios Lands Biopic on Bass Reeves, First Black U.S. Deputy Marshal, From ‘The Rider’ Helmer Chloé Zhao

exclusive: Amazon studios will be the studio behind chloé zhao’s untitled bass reeves biopic, a historical western about the first black u.s. Deputy marshal.

Zhao is writing and will direct the pic, which will follow reeves’ journey as a young man born into slavery in 1838 who fled to the indian territory in search of freedom and went on to become one of the greatest lawmen of the american west.

Zhao made her directorial debut with the film songs my brothers taught me, which was produced by forest whitaker and debuted at the 2015 sundance film festival. Her follow-up feature, the rider, premiered at cannes and won the art cinema award. In addition, the film earned her a nom for best feature and best director at this year’s independent spirit award, where she also picked up the bonnie award for innovative vision and breakthrough work of female directors.
Quote:
Zhao has two films in development, one set 3,000 years in the future, and the other a 1800s biopic about Bass Reeves (the first black U.S. marshal) that she hopes to shoot before the end of the year. Neither project obviously allows her to cast her real-life subjects, like she did in her first two films, but even in going through a more traditional casting process, she insists she’ll work with bigger name professionals the way she did with Jandreau.

“You can work with an actor in a certain way, you can create an environment like Terrence Malick has always done, so your actors can give you a very similar thing you get from a non-actors,” said Zhao.

Yes, part III of her "Prairie Trilogy"! The Rider was such a powerful and touching movie! It went straight into my Top 3 of 2018. I'm excited what she will do with a historical subject matter.
