This latest film from Neil Jordan is a nerve-rattling thriller in which loneliness breeds malice. Featuring an especially captivating turn from the ever-versatile Isabelle Huppert, Greta exudes Jordan’s singular capacity for ushering gothic chills into a contemporary context.

A sweet, naïve young woman making a go of it in the Big Apple, Frances (Chloë Grace Moretz) doesn’t think twice about returning the handbag she finds on the subway to its rightful owner. That owner is Greta (Huppert), a peculiar pianist with a predilection for Romantic music and a desperate need for company. Frances recently lost her mother and feels alienated by her father; Greta has lost her husband, and her daughter lives far away. The two become fast friends — but that friendship rapidly assumes ever more sinister hues as Greta’s attentions escalate.

Written by Jordan and Ray Wright, Greta wastes little time before plunging us into a vortex of obsession and manipulation, revealing its characters true nature little by little thanks to Jordan’s exquisite handling of suspense. The film’s psychological acuity and gradations of peril are greatly aided by its performances, not only those of Huppert and Moretz, but also Colm Feore, Jordan regular Stephen Rea, and Maika Monroe as Frances’ more practical and resourceful roommate.

Isabelle Huppert starring in a Neil Jordan thriller sounds fantastic. Hopefully Moretz doesn't drag this down too much though. Would've been better if Maika Monroe and Moretz swapped roles.

A great actress playing the main role in a film by a pretty bad director, it's almost worth to see based on that.

Saw it at TIFF. It’s unabashedly trashy fun. Very camp, self-aware and comically deranged. Not exactly top-tier Jordan or Huppert, but it has a ton of commercial potential as a hit thriller compared to their recent works. It’s a role that Huppert can do in her sleep, but it’s also a role only an actress of her caliber can elevate into something more than a mere one-note caricature that is such a joy to watch and never gets tiresome. While she’s hilariously bat shit crazy at times, she still emits an imposing presence throughout the film and never ceases being a threatening villain amidst all the wackiness. A great balancing act from her and just the kind of performance the movie needed in order to work.

Moretz is serviceable, but she didn’t sink it like I thought she would.

I'm always super blown away by her presence on screen. but more so if you see her in person and realize how tiny she is. but you never feel weakness from her on screen.

man, I hope this gets picked up and given a semi wide release. hardly any of her stuff gets a theatrical release here, and that's such a bummer.

Apparently Focus Features just picked it up after an all-night auction that I guess was fairly intense, with others like Netflix and Lionsgate, etc. looking for NA/Australia/China rights. The article says the auction price was $6M.

Apparently it was very-well liked by the audience.
