If your HP Notebook computer does not have an internal optical drive slot, then that is a good question in regards to what the best external BD-ROM drive is. If it was me I would purchase a external USB 3.0 optical disc enclosure and place the Pioneer BDR-211UBK in the enclosure so that one would have the potential to read 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. However if one does not need 4K Ultra HD support (which most Notebook and desktop’s cannot play because of the extreme security hardware requirements), then you might want to get a Pioneer BDR-XU03 that is a nice and thin external optical drive. If you need M Disc support LG does make the BE14NU40 external BD-ROM drive.

Well my DVD R/W Drive (E) crapped out on me. As far as external disc drives goes my HP Laptop only has one USB port. Does the Pioneer BDR-XU03 need 2 USB ports?

All external USB optical drives only use one USB port. In addition, if you only have one USB port on your Laptop computer, then you can purchase a 4 port USB 3.0 hub for $8.99 plus free shipping from a place like New Egg. This well add a total of 4 USB 3.0 ports to your Laptop computer, however if your Laptop computer only has a USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 jack then you well still be able to use the product but not at USB 3.0 speeds.

In addition, I have never tried this brand in the link below, this was just one of the cheapest 4 port USB 3.0 hubs I found doing a fairly quick search. There are better quality hubs for 2 or 3 times the price. Some hubs are poor quality and end up needing to be returned since they do not work correctly.

Thanks but the link doesn't work. I kept reading reviews for external BD-ROM drives online and most of them said that you need 2 USB ports. Let me pose another question. What's the best cheapest external BD-ROM drive out there?

You have to manually copy and paste the link using "control C" since Blu-ray.com blocks New EGG and Amazon links unless they have a special format.

The optical drives that need two USB ports are only when a external power supply needs to be used if the existing port on the computer cannot provide enough power. Most of the time one only needs to use one USB port on a optical drive if the Notebook computer can provide enough power.

External optical drives are always going to cost more money because of the external case. Also the cheapest drives in general are going to have a slower read and write speed. I would recommend you do your own research to see what features you want and how much you would be willing to pay for a drive.

Thank you for all of your expertise on this matter. I need to quit thinking cheap especially when it comes to electronics.
