Thumbs up Cursed Films 2: The Cursening.

Ok, I made up The Cursening but Shudder can use it if they want. Anyhoo...

Season 2 is a real thing now and I am friggin pumped. The list of movies is a little odd but I still think it will be great.

----------

RLJE Films, in association with Shudder, will bring to Blu-ray Cursed Films: Season Two (2021-2022). The release will be available for purchase on September 20.

Official description: Shudder's acclaimed documentary series Cursed Films returns with a new five-episode season exploring the facts and myths surrounding a new batch of Hollywood's notoriously "cursed" horror film productions.
  • The Wizard of Oz
  • Rosemary's Baby
  • Stalker
  • The Serpent and the Rainbow
  • Cannibal Holocaust

were these films really cursed, as many believe, or just the victims of bad luck and bizarre circumstances? Directed by Jay Cheel, and starring Mark Badley-Newkirk, Livio Bioglio, Stephen Cox, John Fricke, Aljean Harmetz, Blanche Barton, and many more.

----------

CURSED FILMS II Q&A with Writer / Director / Producer Jay Cheel

So many popular films have legendary behind-the-scenes stories where it becomes hard to separate fact from fiction. What interests you so much about these stories and sharing them with the world via Cursed Films?

First off, I’m a big film fan and am fascinated by the behind-the-scenes mechanics and politics of a film set. Even when things go 100% according to plan, it’s still a major undertaking and seems like a miracle that it all coalesces into anything remotely resembling a story. When you add to that the idea of so many things going wrong with a production that one might think they’re “cursed”, it opens up conversations beyond the cinema screen that dip into our own need to look for patterns and reasoning behind what seems to be a fairly random set of events. In short, it’s just a great jumping-off point for some fascinating conversations about art, creativity, and psychology.

Season two was really good and they actually put some thought and effort into it.

Season one was documentary filmmaking at its laziest. Twilight Zone: The Movie or The Crow, I forget which, was like, let's interview Lloyd Kaufman from Troma for 10 minutes about on-set safety.

I can't believe Stalker is an episode. That's awesome.

I like that it's not limited to just Horror

It's a weird series as almost none of the films featured in the second season were in any way 'cursed', nor do the series makers try to paint them as such in any of the episodes.

The Serpent & The Rainbow episode is a damn good 'making of' documentary though, & probably better than the one Shout put on their Collector's Edition blu-ray.

Yeah, the second set of films is hardly 'cursed' but still interesting nonetheless. Anyone expecting some kind of "cursed movie" is going to feel gypped, but just to find out all kinds of trivia and details, the second season is pretty good.

I enjoyed how they handled the “Munchkin story” for Wizard of Oz. Appealing to the ones who knew it was never true but also not dismissing those who still believe it.

Couldn't agree more with the review of Season 2 on the site. While Season 1 was really interesting and had some validity, there is nothing about any of the films looked at in the 2nd season that having anything to do with curses... The producers should've simply given it a different title because it doesn't make a lick of sense... Pass.

Even though I liked season 2, I'll agree that I wouldn't consider the films "cursed". The only one I'd make a case for is Rosemary's Baby, because the whole coincidence tying it both to the Manson murders and the murder of John Lennon at the Dakota where it was filmed is quite eerie.

If you're interested in the production of the films themselves, you should find these interesting. There were a lot of details here I didn't know. Plus, they actually interviewed relevant people here, unlike season one which felt like a last minute homework assignment thrown together.

The episodes I've seen so far on 2 I enjoyed. Will buy the Blu-ray for the Wizard of Oz story alone, I just love that type of myth..it's creepy even if it is BS. Bottom line most of the productions are just normal problems that arise, but I love hearing about them.

If you agree you should watch the doc on Island of Dr. Moreau.. it's incredible what went on there. (Director being fired and sneaking back onto the set in a dog costume with the extras...)

Is there a commentary track for the episodes in the season 2 set?

This two-disc set ships in a keepcase with spooky cover artwork and a promotional insert that just gets in the way of Disc 1, dammit. The extras are less impressive than last time, with no audio commentaries to be found.

Extended Interview with Adam Savage (1:40) - One of the season's most level-headed guests speaks briefly about the power of film props -- specifically, Dorothy's dress and ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz -- and their emotional importance to him as a lifelong fan of cinema.

Extended Interview with Gregg Turkington (2:31) - On the other end of the spectrum, Wizard of Oz curse aficionado and retro video store owner Greg Turkington talks about his 15 different VHS copies of the film and his efforts to keep them separated in case of accidental damage.

Deleted Sequence (9:43) - This deleted scene from episode #2 features David Oman at the Oman House, his home on Los Angeles' Cielo Drive that sits roughly 150 feet from the Sharon Tate property. Among other topics, he provides a brief tour of the area and speaks about activities that took place during the production of Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (with a few "unofficial" video recordings, naturally).
