Is there any difference in playback between a TV with built-in Smart TV and a separate Smart TV set-top box?

It seems to me that the advantage of smart TVs is their greater ease of installation. Smart TV contains everything you need and does not require additional equipment. Having bought Smart TV, you get a set of tuners for watching on-air, cable and satellite TV, a processor, a memory and an operating system for working with online services, a media player for viewing content from external drives, USB connectors for connecting them, etc. But at the same time, bundles from a conventional TV or monitor and Android Smart TV set-top box are characterized by great flexibility. Because if the prefix software is out of date, it can be easily changed to a newer and more functional one, rather than replacing the entire TV.

I would smack the Smart out of my tv if I could.

Just want a great HDR display and OTA tuner.

I think it depends on the Smart TV and the STB. I have a Sony UHD TV with the X1 Processor and Android Apps. I have no problems accessing any Streaming Provider except Apple, and my PQ is Rock Solid. So what TV and size were you thinking of getting, and also what STB?

Problem with built-in smart TV is they can become obsolete quickly. Also not every manufacturer includes all the apps. Though built-in now is pretty much the rule and not the exception. At some point an exterior box will be needed if a user plans on using a TV for more than 3-4 years.

This - My TV is about 2.5 years old and some apps have stopped receiving updates.

Usually the ATV4k, Ruku for example offer streaming apps that the 4K TV just don’t support. As time goes by, the 4K TV manufacturers are not inspired to maintain major app updates, or features that might alternates to their respective App Store. But going by the exact question against playback, as long as it TV support the same resolution and HDR standard that the content provide by the set-top box they would not be something noticeable in PQ.
