Default What Maisie Knew

What Maisie Knew Blu-ray

NEWS/TRAILER
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=11319

Quote:
Millennium Entertainment will release a combo pack edition of directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel's What Maisie Knew (2012), starring Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan, Alexander Skarsgård, Joanna Vanderham, and Onata Aprile. The release will be available for purchase on August 13th.

A contemporary reimagining of Henry James' novel, WHAT MAISIE KNEW tells the story of a captivating little girl's struggle for grace in the midst of her parents' bitter custody battle. Told through the eyes of the title's heroine, Maisie navigates this ever-widening turmoil with a six-year-old's innocence, charm and generosity of spirit.

An aging rock star (Moore) and a contemporary art dealer (Coogan)—Susanna and Beale are too self-involved even to notice their neglect and inadequacy as parents; their fight for Maisie is just another battle in an epic war of personalities. As they raise the stakes by taking on inappropriate new partners, the ex-nanny Margo and the much younger bartender Lincoln (Vanderham and Skarsgård), the shuffling of Maisie from household to household becomes more and more callous, the consequences more and more troubling. Always watchful, however, Maisie begins to understand that the path through this morass of adult childishness and selfish blindness will have to be of her own making.

Just got done watching this. Very touching film. Watching the parents get more and more neglectful was irritating to watch. I obviously liked the second half more than the first.
[Show spoiler]It was pleasant to see Maisie start out as a silent girl who was often ignored and transform into a more outgoing happy child who had two people who cared about her.
I got teary eyed at the end.

I hope this drops in price fast, I'm eager to see it being a fan of Alexander Skarsgard and the film looks good as a whole.

This movie was phenomenal. Best of the year, quite possibly.

Wow, so is this the best film of the year that nobody is talking about? I just saw this today and was incredibly moved by the story and Onata Aprile's performance. It disgusts me that the Wallis girl from Beasts of the Southern Wild gets a ridiculous courtesy oscar nomination for doing OK in a mediocre film (the Obama's oscar support helped alot too), while Onata Aprile isn't getting enough recognition for a far better child performance.

I'm glad I bought the American release, because the artwork on the Canadian cover is terrible and doesn't do the film justice at all.

Certainly one of the very best. Yes, I agree with you that it has been ignored.

I agree. It's a crime that this film isnt getting more buzz. I felt the entire film was good and the ending was beautiful. So far it's my second favorite film of the year.

Canadian cover:

Glad I was able to find the American release at the Sunrise store in Toronto. Don't know why Mongrel media would drastically change the artwork for Canada.

I just watched this as well and to think I let the Blu-ray sit for a month before giving it a spin. Fantastic film. Highly recommended.

Just watched this on netflix. Wow, this movie is so good, so well done. It plays with your emotions and tugs on your heart. The girl did an unbelievable job in her role. I'm looking forward to seeing her in future roles. She seems wise and talented beyond her years. There was a nice twist to the story and luckily the movie ended on a happier note than the beginning/middle. These are the types of movies I absolutely love. What an absolute treat What Maisie Knew was.

5/5

this flick was pretty awesome, i thought it was a bit winded until Skarsgard came into play, after that it was really well done. Steve Coogan, I almost didn't buy him, but he wasn't in it for too long.

Great to see a thread in which people actually talk about this film. I made a thread over at the UK forums that's been almost completely ignored.

Count me as another fan of this film. Very sweet, minimalist and engaging.

Skarsgaard was excellent, as was everyone else, including Coogan who was casted against type. There is definitely a different energy when Skargaard arrives though. I dunno if it's because we're excited that Maisie has a found somebody who cares about her or if it's because of his charisma.

Coogan was cast against type for sure, I'm just not certain he pulled it off. I think that Skarsgard was also cast against type for this role and we get to see a side of him that was FREAKIN' MAGIC. He showed some good acting chops and really made me like the bum type of character he played.
