Agreed, I am surprised every time I see they still haven't figured it out. On the other hand, they might not *want* to do them as it'll involve SDR conversions and people can have very strong and varied opinions about how those should be done...

Oh, there will be opinions. But I can't imagine anyone opining that screenshots of a previous edition are somehow preferable to (maybe not perfectly accurate) SDR conversions from the actual release being reviewed.

I've said many times that I'd be happy to provide even Blu-ray screenshots for releases that don't have them... there are so many releases on this site that could use screenshots that don't have them. And of course I'd be happy to provide 4K screenshots as well. I don't understand why this site doesn't increase their screenshot staff. It seems that only discs with reviews get screenshots. I think this site should have a screenshot staff that can operate independently of the site's reviewers.

Agree. At least with providing SDR-converted screenshots for UHD reviews.
If there is a UHD BD with a new remaster, the accompanying "standard" BD often doesn't get a remaster and is just repackaged. Adding/reusing screenshots of the old BD transfer doesn't really add any value then, has no relation to the review text and may rather confuse some readers. But I wouldn't use the screenshots here for anything else than a quick glance and knowing what the text is about anyways - they are compressed and there is often no comparison possible, as screenshots are different. I may mention the following site: https://caps-a-holic.com/ This site is dedicated to taking captures/screenshots of audiovisual physical media, incl. SDR conversions of UHD BDs. ![]() The guys there are also perfectionists; captures are taken with a proper setup for correct colors and saved losslessly. Maybe some of you know the site already, but sharing it will be helpful for the others. ![]() |

I wish that caps-a-holic would mouseover the comparison on the initial preview. A lot of the time, I just want to quickly compare framing, grading, etc between (Blu-ray) releases. I never use the zoom, and fullscreen loading is slow. When I want a resolution comparison, I will of course use the fullscreen option, but they could potentially save a lot of bandwidth if there's anyone else out there like me.
And I really wish they would go dark mode as well, for looking at screenshots it's just ![]() I would use caps-a-holic way more often if they addressed those 2 points. |
