United Kingdom David Attenborough: The Blu-ray Anthology (3D)

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet -

CannyStore are releasing a 9-disc set of Attenborough titles. Is basically a compilation of all the titles from the two 3D boxsets, plus Triumph of Animals and First Life

I've just ordered it myself, as I have none of these titles, and will post pics soon.

Quote:
This extraordinary collection of eight series on Blu-ray from David Attenborough, six of which also play in 3D, represents the peak of wildlife filming, brought to you by the world s greatest natural historian.

Kingdom of Plants sees Attenborough using the latest macro photography to reveal a wholly unseen world, from the most beautiful flower to the most bizarre. In Galapagos, he takes us on a remarkable journey to these enchanting Pacific islands. And his passion for the arthropod world takes hold in Micro Monsters as killer ants, predatory spiders and ferocious scorpions run wild. Natural History Museum Alive takes us on a ground-breaking journey through this famous London landmark as cutting-edge science and CGI combine to bring the museum s long-extinct inhabitants back to life. In Conquest of the Skies, he travels back in time to unravel the astonishing 300-million-year story of the evolution of flight. And narrated by Attenborough himself, The Penguin King tells the story of a heroic, young penguin in South Georgia, one of Earth s last, great wildernesses. David explores the most spectacular wildlife from around the world in Rise of Animals, it is an eye-opening journey that combines captivating CGI graphics with superb natural history footage. Now, in the landmark series First Life, he completes his journey by going back in time to the very roots of the tree of life, in search of the very first animals.

I have this set, and just so you know it contains the exact same discs as previous releases, except for 'First Life' which has only been released on Dutch Blu-Ray before. Unfortunately both Rise of Animals and First Life still have these crummy blend-interlaced video encodes.

Thanks for confirmation. I don't any of the previous releases (except for Galapagos - but I've only got the Australian edition which has no 3D), so this seemed like good value to me. Pretty much the last titles I need (except for the two dinosaur ones) to complete my set.

Unfortunate to hear about Rise of Animals and First Life encodes. I wonder if the encode on the Rise of Animals release in Australia is any better - would consider buying it here and replacing the disc.

Are the 3D discs also playable in 2D?

I'm not going to buy anymore 3D titles with the recent CES announcements of all manufacturers pretty much dropping 3D.

But I'll settle for Attenborough, if these can be watched in 2D too.

Yep, all the 3D discs play in 2D as well.

What is the quality of the 3D in these? First rate or a bad after conversion? It could lend itself quite well to 3D!

These were filmed in native-3D as a collaboration between Attenborough and Sky 3D as a major push towards original programming for the channel.

Aside from some of the IMAX stuff - They're pretty much the first nature programs / series to be shot on the format, and look spectacular.

Nice, thanks! I think I'll check it out!
No one wants to watch 3D 24/7 so I'm not surprised that 3D television programming failed. They should have marketed 3D as an extra feature on newer, better TV's instead of marketing "3D TV's" as a commodity in and of itself. And they should have focused their efforts improving the presentation quality of 3D in theaters and towards 3D bluray alone at home. People wouldn't have felt like the format "failed" when 3D TVs didn't fly off the shelves and 3D television channels disappeared.

Awesome! Totally worth it, and at a really decent price too.

Also worth checking out his film "Flying Monsters 3D", which isn't included in the set.

Yeah, completely agree with you there. You didn't buy a "3D TV" because you wanted to watch 3D, you bought one because you wanted a TV, and it just so happened to have a cool functionality too.
I guess they just did what they did to make more TVs fly off the shelves and assure that people who didn't actually need a new TV thought they did.

No idea why they need to "kill off" 3D in panels. Surely it can't hurt just leaving that tiny little functionality for those who want it.

Yeah, I'm very surprised by the lack of publicity behind this set.
Probably because it's an independent release by CannyStore, who obviously have distribution rights to the films.
I only stumbled across it when I was looking up info on the two 3D sets.

Yeah saw that, pretty excellent. Worked out cheaper to import from Amazon to Australia, but might be a cheaper option to order direct for those in the UK

No, only in 2D. Two of Attenborough's best docos in my opinion.

They were produced as companion documentaries, which I didn't realise until I did some reading into them.

Make sure you watch First Life first, Rise of Animals picks up exactly where it leaves off.

Bought this yesterday from the cannystore and got it delivered today.
Came down to £30.40 using the black friday code, that appears to still be valid.

Just asking for a reconfirmation that this set is region free. I was about the order Natural History Museum Alive from AmazonUK when I saw this and figured it is a great deal for all of the 3D's plus the other two (individually it would cost $96.18 with shipping to me here in the USA)

This set would actually be around $54 US shipped.

Even the 3rd party seller on amazon us is over b$10 more.

Here on this site it's listed as lowest price at £34.99. Just want to hear from someone in the US that has tested these that they are region free.
Thanks!
