Warner Bros Deep Blue Sea 3 (2020)

Deep Blue Sea 3 (2020) Blu-ray
Quote:
BURBANK, CA (June 17, 2020) – New discoveries and predators emerge in the middle of the ocean in the highly anticipated feature film, Deep Blue Sea 3, from Warner Bros Home Entertainment (WBHE). Following the breakout success of Deep Blue Sea 2, itself a sequel to the 1999 cult hit Deep Blue Sea, Deep Blue Sea 3 is the next feature length installment of the franchise’s ocean adventures set for release on July 28, 2020 on Digital and August 25, 2020 on Blu-rayTM Combo Pack and DVD for $24.98 / $19.98 SRP ($29.98 / $24.98 in Canada).

Emma Collins, an eminent marine biologist, and her crew have set up a mid-ocean laboratory over a sunken island town in the ocean where they are observing the first known Great White mating area. Unfortunately, the enhanced Bull Sharks that escaped in Deep Blue Sea 2 are also there with their own evolutionary goal: cross-breeding with the bigger faster Great Whites. The mission’s patron, Richard Lowell, believes that the Bull Sharks contain the key to intelligence enhancement, which he secretly intends to sell for big profits. Now, Emma and her crew are trapped on crumbling stilt houses mere feet over the ocean, caught between predators above and below the water.

Deep Blue Sea 3 stars Tania Raymonde (Lost, Goliath) as Emma Collins, a marine biologist who is committed to making the world a better place and Nathaniel Buzolic (The Vampire Diaries, Hacksaw Ridge) an ex-boyfriend who has chosen money over ethics. Other cast includes Emerson Brooks (MacGyver), Bren Foster (The Last Ship) and Japanese star, Reina Aoi as Miya, a grad student who is part of Emma’s small research team that is working on an island sinking in the Mozambique channel.

“We were thrilled with the success of the sequel” said Executive Producer, Tom Keniston, “and with Deep Blue Sea 3 we are able to build on the success of the franchise with a brand new story that will give audiences all the thrills and excitement they expect from a Deep Blue Sea movie.”

“The Deep Blue Sea franchise has developed a cult following for over two decades,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Senior Vice President, Originals, Animation and Family Marketing. “With Deep Blue Sea 3, we deliver all the shark action fans love and we know that it will be a hit with both new and existing fans of the franchise.

The film is directed by John Pogue (The Quiet Ones) and written by Dirk Blackman (Outlander). Tom Keniston (Deep Blue Sea 2) serves as executive producer and is produced by Hunt Lowry (Donnie Darko) and Patty Reed (Pure Country Pure Heart) for Roserock Films. The creative team includes cinematographer, Michael Swan, production designer, Franz Lewis, costume designer, Ruy Fillipe and casting by Harriet Greenspan in the US, Annelie Powell in the UK and Bonnie Rodini in South Africa.

The first surprise sequel was actually pretty decent for Direct-to-DVD, so I'm excited to check this one out. It isn't like were getting a ton of new content these days...

I tend to lean more to darkness' view here, and I ****ing love the first one. Saw it in theater, owned dvd, upped to blu, would up to 4K if I get a chance. Bought part 2 the day released and the best part about that one is the cover-art. Such a letdown. I'll probably Redbox this one if the library isn't up and running yet. Not letting a pretty slipcover make me buy another stinker.

I’ve always really like the first Deep Blue Sea also. Like you I also saw it in theaters, owned the DVD & now the BD. I was surprised when they announced the sequel, was even looking forward to it a bit. Then I watched it & it was bad. Still might give this one a chance though I guess.

I fear I might not be able to pass either. I'm a lover of good shark movies but a sucker for bad ones. The first one was a perfect balance IMO. The worst part about 2 is I was warned by early reviews, but ignored them.

Lord grant me strength to pass up on this, unless there are some surprise good reviews. Of course I don't usually even bother with reviews as I like to make my own opinion, but with recent DTV sequels like DBS2 and Tales from the Hood 2, the reviews are more in step with my views.

Wow talk about a surprise, I still have my un-open copy of part 2, looks like I know what I'll be watching this Friday night with some popcorn.

The original premise/outline for Deep Blue Sea 2 back in the early 2000's (I think they were calling it Deep Red Sea) sounded so cool. I'd love to see that get made some day, I but doubt a direct-to-video budget would do the action scenes justice.

Save yourself some time and don't watch it because it's awful. If it's still sealed, sell it.

Sharks attacking because of climate change? That’s seriously the premise?

What is it about filmmakers who don’t know how to make movies trying to make movies with environmentalist themes? Birdemic and Suburban Sasquatch were laughable and impossible to take their message seriously.

Birdemic is B-movie gold though, made all the better that the director really thought he was making a great movie with a serious message. Haven't seen Sub Sas but might have to look it up. Birdemic 2 suffered from trying to re-create the accidental magic of the first film.

Well, tons of sci-fi and horror films of the 50's were based around the whole "atomic energy/bombs can cause everything bad" premise from gigantic resurrected mutated dinosaurs to people being shrunk into infinity and while most were terrible, some fun and even decent flicks came out of that. In the 70's the cause of weird aberrations was moved to pollution. These days it's climate change. Having some sort of hard to explain, all encompassing usually man-made (un)natural phenomena to account for nature-gone-wrong is almost as old as the genre itself.

But have we ever had an environmentalist horror film that’s actually good?

The Australian Long Weekend is great. Phase IV is good. The Host is a more recent example. Though the pollution is of an extraterrestrial nature, The Andromeda Strain and Annihilation are environmentalist horror films.

While the reason of the avian behavior is never explained, Hitchcock's The Birds is widely seen as the granddaddy of the environmental horror film. It innovated the tropes those films would recycle later on.
