I’d be surprised if Widows doesn’t get nominated for best ensemble

The SAGs are less averse to nominating young performances than AMPAS. I wonder if Thomasin McKenzie (Leave No Trace) might show up.

Emily Blunt got a double nomination! Undoubtedly the year of Blunt.

No Regina King? Color me shocked. No, really.

All the Emily Blunt love makes me giddy. If it were up to me, she'd already be an Oscar winner for Looper and a nominee for The Devil Wears Prada.

Totally didn't see that Margot Robbie nomination coming.

Bohemian Rhapsody grows stronger, and BlacKkKlansman is shaping up to become a strong contender.

I still wish they didn't put Blunt in supporting for A Quiet Place, as I think that's easily a lead role, but I understand how they want to avoid vote splitting with Mary Poppins Returns. Yeah, the Robbie nom was probably my biggest surprise, she was fine didn't even find her to really stand out in that movie (though I imagine she misses to Regina King at the academy).

I really don't understand the nominations for Blackkklansman TBH. I liked it but that was no where near my top for the year. In terms of male acting specifically, did people not watch Joaquin Phoenix or Ethan Hawk this year?

I'm also bummed on how Ben Foster and Charlie Plummer aren't getting much attention either.

Rhapsody for Best Cast is kinda mystifying to me, especially when you consider the contenders that have been left off. I'm not sure how much stock to put into these nominations, they're so far afield in some cases like Blunt for AQP (not that she's bad by any means but I really doubt she gets nominated for it). The BlackKklansman nominations are also a bit surprising but I haven't seen that yet, so I can't comment on how well-deserved they are (they're probably fine, just unexpected).

I really would like to see Jordan get an Oscar nomination for Black Panther.

Ha! Same here... i like when netflix stuff is nominated cuz they send us the full seasons on dvd!

Bohemian Rhapsody getting a cast nom over something like Vice is crazy to me.

Crazy Rich Asians was a good romantic comedy, it did not break the mold or set itself apart from other good romantic comedies, a far superior film that features a predominantly asian cast was Searching.

I think Bale has this awards season locked up, supporting is still a toss up, but i think this may be the year Glenn Close finally wins her Oscar!

I would love to see Close finally win, but I think Gaga and Colman are leading at the moment. I just don't hear any buzz at all about The Wife aside from Close's performance, but hey, that was enough for Julianne Moore/Still Alice a few years ago.

Am I the only one who just doesn't care at all about actors performances imitating politicians?

Even if they nail to a T the character, I'm just not that impressed.

Based on SAG's history, the likely thing is to basically assume a 4/5 match with the academy nominees per category. Though I could certainly see supporting actress being a 3/5 match.

I do think there's been way too big a push over the years towards playing real-life people, rather than creating a three-dimensional fictional character from the ground-up.

I think i tend to think the opposite, when someone nails a real life person the way Bale has, it just impresses the hell out of me with the skill and research and craft that went in to capturing every subtle nuance.

I dont think pkaying real life characters are the ones that go down in history the way an original creation does, like a Michael Keaton in Birdman, who lost to eddie redmayne for playing Hawking (and i think Keaton was robbed!)... but Bale's performance as Cheney is i think the single best performance of a real life person i have ever seen.

Other sad omissions were Sam Rockwell not getting in for Vice, he is great as Bush.

And i guess im not surprised that the best pucture front runner this year (for now) didnt get a nomination (Roma) as i think that is more STORY and Directing over acting.
