If you haven't had your fill of Shaw Brothers announcements for the day, 88 Films will be releasing The Chinese Boxer (1970) in the US on November 9th.

Sweet. I'll hold and grab the US version, as that will allow to me to save some on international shipping. I wonder if this means Disciples of Shaolin and The Flags of Iron will also get released in the US, as the AmazonUK listing had it labeled as Region A and B.

Ah, one of my favourite Shaws!

I sadly suspect this will be the same heavily frame-cut master from 2004 (normally that practice isn't obvious, but as this film is so reliant on rapid editing and I was familar with the UK VHS, it's quite annoying here), but I still heartily reccomend it! And given the atrocious remix on the HK DVD, this release becomes especially important.

Wong Ching is an interesting one as he's mostly a sneaky villain (Heroes Two is probably his best role) but I expect most of us first encountered him as the hero in the weird basher Not Scared To Die, a film that probably would have disapeared withut a trace had not it gotten a second wind as Eagle Shadow Fist due to Wong's co-star being a young Jackie Chan! And if you ever want to see someone getting their eyes gouged out then thrown off a cliff accompanied by The Moody Blues' "Nights in White Satin", then that is the movie for you!

Chinese Boxer also has a recond number of "But Stills..." (see this video 4min in...)

This is one of the few Shaw films I've seen and I love it. The final battle against the Japanese martial artists is epic.

I'm especially fond of Lo Lieh raising the roof in the teahouse.

88 are releasing this in the US, not Arrow

Hrmmmm. Seems like the Arrow Shaw Bros. set has a US release though, from how Diabolik has it set on their site. And it does include King Boxer.

King Boxer and The Chinese Boxer are two different films.
