Your Best Option For Films Not On Blu-Ray

Okay, so we all have films we're still desperately waiting to be released on blu-ray.

You become impatient and give up hope on it ever happening.

So as an alternative, what do you prefer?

- Buy the movie on DVD? It's a piece of physical media that you own but it's only in standard definition.

- Buy the movie on streaming HD? It's in HD but depending on where you live, playback might be problematic plus you don't "own" it.

Just a force of habit i store my dvds and i just like to have another copy.

I don't stream unless there's absolutely no other option. And I certainly never "buy" anything that I don't get full and permanent access to on my own hard drive. I'm old and set in my ways.

That's for sure, though there are still quite a few Warner titles I'm interested in too.

I thought of this the other day when I was going through my iTunes account and realized I had bought The Day of the Jackal on HD years ago, when the only DVD was a poor quality, non-anamorphic release. It's kind of redundant now with the Arrow release, but it's still there if I want to watch it.

I started browsing and saw that there are lots of titles available for streaming purchase where the extant DVDs are absolute shit (or don't even exist at all!). I've always been kind of "old school" where I need to have a physical item, and for sure I'm that way if there is a blu-ray to buy, but in the case of these stop gaps I'm thinking that I might just break down and buy a couple more.

If possible I will buy the DVD and do the VUDU disk to Digital to get the HD copy as well.

For titles that have yet to see a Blu-ray release I will either stick with the DVD or upgrade to the iTunes 1080p download which I liberate from the Apple Ecosystem, then re-authoring to Blu-ray. (I'd outline the process involved, but such discussions aren't permitted here on the forums.) That being said, my most recent addition was the threatrical version of Dumb and Dumber. It's the official 1080p download from iTunes. If you rent the title it's the theatrical version. If you purchase it you get both versions.

I store all the movies and TV shows I purchase for playback in Sony 400-disc Blu-ray players. Not interested in the movies and TV shows I "supposedly" own being spread out across other platforms as well, those other platforms requiring the use of certain apps for playback, in some cases needing to be logged into an account as well. So for digital downloads, unless I can drop the given title on a Blu-ray once purchasing it I won't buy it. Short of that I stick with the DVD. Apple could pull any given title from their library tomorrow or even change the attributes of something I've already purchased, but didn't have downloaded prior. Once liberated from Apple's ecosystem I own it, no "Apple" strings attached and in my case I prefer to re-author the given file to Blu-ray. There's something to be said for parity. To each his own naturally.

Your thoughts mirror my own. I've been known to purchase the dvd only to then use it to store my unofficial Blu Ray copy.

I go for the DVD, but I don't go out of my way or pay anymore than a few dollars. I'll just casually find it at used media store or thrift shop.

Instead of buying a digital version I'd rather find it streaming on one of the services I subscribe to or airing on cable TV where I can set it to record to the DVR and then watch at my leisure.
