Default November 2017

Last night I screened November, an Estonian horror/fantasy movie. Amazing film! The B&W cinematography is breathtaking. Every shot is gorgeous. It's lit like an old school Universal horror. The film itself is based on Estonian myths and fairy tales. It's completely puzzling, but it has its own interior logic. It features witches, ghosts, werewolves, the plague, the devil and unholy beasts made out of farm tools. If I had to compare it to anything, it would be The VVitch, Eraserhead and Tale of Tales. Like a lot of the best horror films, it sprinkles humor in throughout to keep everything fun. The only actor i recognized was the scientist from the first Human Centipede movie. He doesn't have as much to do in this film, but he is still great. Reminds me a lot of David Warner. Image quality is demonstration quality. Dynamic and clear sound, but not a lot of surround in the rear channels. This film is the best I've seen in quite a while. Check it out if you get a chance.

Doesn’t sound like my cup of tea, but I appreciate your opinion and enthusiasm.

How/ where did you find this, stream, disc, theater?

I ordered the blu-ray from England (Eureka). There's a US release too (Oscilloscope Laboratories). Just released. I think this is the director's first film. If this is any indication, he is going to be very successful.

Yes, it's an outstanding film! I have the Eureka BD. The director has made 2 other films-The Idiot, and Where Souls Go. I haven't seen either one.

Not familiar with this film or filmmaker at all, but it looks like something I’d appreciate. Thanks for the write up and for posting the trailer. Added to watchlist.

Saw November on the Eureka blu and it's a spectacular looking film with gorgeous B&W imagery. If they shot this digitally, I'm mighty impressed with how close they've gotten to the look of film. It partially reminds me of the 50's Finnish dark fairy tale movie The White Reindeer (also released by Eureka).

Interestingly Oscilloscope have a 5.1 track listed on their release while Eureka blu only features a 2.0 track. Wonder why this is and what the original track for the movie was. Eureka only has trailers as extras on the disc, but a rather good essay on the included booklet.
