Quote:
The myth and poetry of the old west come alivein Fred Zinnemann's (Julia) classic western, High Noon (1952). One of the great treasures of the American cinema, the film stars the legendary Gary Cooper as lawman Will Kane, a marshal who stands alone to defend a town of cowardly citizens against a gangof killers out for revenge. Unfolding in real time, the tension builds aswe race ever closer to the climactic duel from which the film takes its name. For his career-defining role, Cooper would goonto win the Oscar for Best Actor. High Noon's stellar cast also includes Lloyd Bridges (Try and Get Me), Thomas Mitchell (It's a Wonderful Life), Katy Jurado (Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid),Otto Kruger (Saboteur),Lon Chaney (The Wolf Man), Henry Morgan (Strategic Air Command), Jack Elam (Hannie Caulder) and Lee Van Clef (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly).

This'll be a definite double-dip for me. Classic film that looked decent on the old blu-ray... except for bad encoding. Had a lot of the "shimmering force field" effect around moving objects. Not frozen grain, per se, but an annoying symptom of the compression algorithm which clearly shows that only "differences" in the image are updated from frame to frame. Once you tune into it, it's impossible to un-see, so the old HIGH NOON disc was always a tough one to watch, for me. Very excited about this news!

Looks like Olive is stepping up their game big time. This looks like a a Criterion-esque kind of release.

Olive should do a trade-in program for those of us who already bought this on blu.

Considering they just recently added subtitles to their releases I wouldn't count on that.

My bet is they will do a 4K restoration of Invasion of the Body Snatchers as well with extras in the future.

That's a no brainer. It's a safe guess, IMO.

Hopefully we'll get a better release of The Quiet Man as well.

I hope you're joking.

The first Olive release came out 4 years ago.

Studios are constantly remastering and rereleasing Blu-rays. How many of them have ever been eligible for a trade-in program? It's not like they released this two months ago and just announced a new edition.

People (myself included) have had 4 years to enjoy the old release. 4 years is well past the point at which I'm entitled to a discount on a new release.

Never got around to buying Olive's current release, so I'm happy to not have to double dip on this one! This is a great-looking release from them...who knew! I see Anton Yelchin is involved with one of the extras...couldn't have predicted that but interesting and nonetheless.

For some reason I was under the impression that the current release was sourced from the best print they could find. It would be awesome if they did a 4K restoration of the OCN and put some friggin extras on there! It needs both. I just wish they got it right the first time. I don't like having to put up money to buy it again, but I also don't like having a significantly inferior release. Assuming they don't include the SuperScope version, I guess it's worth hanging onto the current Blu-ray for that, and the fantastic artwork/slipcover.

I like having the original poster art, but yes, that is a very nice cover, maybe even better and more fitting.

Yeah, I find it annoying myself, but I'd rather have movies look as great as possible. I've had to upgrade to Scream Factory and Criterion releases, and I'll continue to do so. I'm not content with having an inferior presentation. It seems like a lot of remasters are coming out lately, so my advice is to be careful when buying certain titles. I'd largely avoid MGM BDs for instance, or really old BD releases of big classics. Any release of a popular movie with bad PQ. Look at the patterns of upgrades and use that to determine what's safe to buy (though it's not perfect).

the current Olive release looks great! I wasn't going to triple dip this one, until dude above mentioned how he didnt like the Olive cover art, then i went, yeah good point, plus all the beautiful supplements (the 4K dangling does nothing for me, studios are going to start doing this for so many films and my wallet can't handle what my eyes can barely make out as better anyway) ...i guess its time for a triple dipper

I pray they don't 4K Titanic.

Looking at the caps, I can see High Noon being improved upon, but it does look solid in some shots. I can see you buying again for extras, but for cover art over a better transfer? Speak for yourself, but the majority of new 4K transfers I've seen come out recently are major improvements. (to be clear, I'm still talking about Blu-ray, not UHD)

As for Titanic, they already did. It happened years ago in preparation for the 3D theatrical rerelease and that's what's on the Blu-ray.
