EXCLUSIVE: We might not have a clear path to a resumption of production yet, but the material market is certainly back in full bloom. The hot spec package tonight is Ball and Chain, with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt attached to play a bickering couple who receive super powers that only work if they can learn to put aside their differences and work together.

Here’s the description from the four-part comic book published in 1999: Edgar and Mallory Bulson have decided to throw in the towel. That was the plan anyway, until a mysterious meteor bathed the battling couple in extraterrestrial energies that gave them super-powers. Will their newfound abilities be enough to make their marriage work?

The script is by Emily V. Gordon (The Big Sick), and Kevin Misher is producing with Seven Bucks. Several studios are bidding, and it sounds like Netflix is emerging as a potential destination. None of the participants would return Deadline’s calls. Johnson and Blunt just teamed for the first time in Jungle Cruise.

Dwayne Johnson has to be the biggest star ever that has never been in a movie that anyone considers an alltime favorite film. As many hits as he's had, nothing seems to rise to any kind of classic status. He doesn't have a Die Hard, Matrix, Lethal Weapon, Indiana Jones, Independence Day, Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, Escape from NY, Terminator, or Rocky film in his credits.

It seems like he churns out a bunch of fun but generic and thoroughly disposable formula flicks. Plenty of stars make a lot of popular junkfood movies, but most the big names at least have those one or two films that will endure the test of time.

Like everything Dwayne has made in the last...ten years it will be completely mediocre and forgettable fluff.
