I don't think it makes sense that if you animate something traditionally, meaning by hand either on paper or some kind of digital pad, but drawn in 2D for each frame either way, and with painted, still backgrounds, it has to compete with all the animations made in a completely different medium, computer generation. It's like making athletes from two different sports compete for a medal. People in general probably like CG more, so there is gonna be a bias in the votes.
I've never watched the Oscars and I don't care about what they nominate, but I still want to ask. Of course, this means that a traditionally animated movie will easily win, since Hollywood does not make any. I'm totally in favor of that incentive. I want them to come back. Haven't watched a CG animation in years. Last edited by Warm Gun; 12-29-2020 at 05:34 AM. |

The animation category should be eliminated, it's time to recognize animated films in the real categories. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Lion King, Toy Story and WALL-E were robbed of a Best Picture nomination.

Mirai? Haven't seen it, but of course this foreign thing wasn't going to win, just like The Tale of the Princess Kayuga was robbed in favor of lesser animated films of that year, winner being Big Hero Six, a movie I barely remember and never revisited. The explanations the voters gave for their picks were amusing to say the least. One of them said their kid liked it more.

It’s not going to make a comeback big enough to justify two categories. One animated feature category with 5 nominees is more than enough to recognize the achievements that year.
I’m already concerned that we are about to get an Oscars with a bunch of filler slots from nominees who wouldn’t have had a shot in normal years (honestly after best actor I don’t see any other category which is close to as competitive as it would be regularly), but am mostly willing to go along with it as an unusual year because of the pandemic even if there will be something of an asterisk in my mind. I don’t want a category like Best Actor in a Musical at the Tonys this year, where there is just one nominee, because there was only a single performance eligible for that category (frankly its embarrassing IMO). |
