I remember when this came out. It was one of the most unintentionally funny films I'd ever seen. Big putty noses, bad impressions, wretched special effects pasting actors into newsreel footage. Then came the show stopper... Nixon scrambling on the floor to pick up his Elvis pills while hallucinating like something out of The Trip. I was in hysterics and couldn't even breathe. Oliver Stone is one of the most ham handed and goofy directors that ever lived, and he thinks he's the second coming of Edward R. Murrow! Priceless!

Hot takes! Get yer hot takes here!
![]() Well, I for one love the film, and will happily get rid of the dated transfer. And if you think the film is "unintentionally" funny, just check out Stone yukking it up on the commentary. And come on, when Hopkins says he'll use "the ol' Nixon charm" and winks, then James Woods fires back, "Who can resist that?" Rolling. |

This movie's transfer history has been weird, to say the least. The extra footage in the DC DVD was noticeably worse, but by the time the blu-ray was released, the extra footage was given a polish, and the movie proper was from what looked like an older master. But yeah, it doesn't look bad.

Great news for the re-issue!!
I was about to hurt down a copy of the previous release (Touchstone / Disney?) hope Kino will carry over all the extra. I always think of this is a great companion piece to JFK. James Wood (and Paul Sorvino) are awesome in it! |

Best film of 1995. Hopkins should've won the Oscar (ditto Joan Allen). The first blu-ray had that horrid 2008 election year tie-in cover. I hope Kino goes back to the original cover art for this release. Stone's most mature film. (#4 on my all-time list). Day one for sure!!!

This movie is a textbook example on the importance of casting and proof that just because you're a phenomenal actor, it doesn't mean that you're right for every part.
Hopkins simply does not look nor sound like Nixon and because of this I wasn't captivated by his performance. |

You haven't looked around much, if that's the case. Leo isn't believable as being anything other than little, baby faced Leo DiCrapio. I don't care how tall Howard Hughes actually was, but Leo seemed like a kid playing an actual adult to me, and I've heard that opinion expressed elsewhere since the year the film was released. There's a difference between "emoting" on camera, which people seem to think acting is and inhabiting the character, which is what I think acting really is. Leo can't do that, he can only appear on the surface to be sick (he always over does coughing on-screen), anguished, fearful, etc. It's always an "act" to me and never organic. Sir Anthony Hopkins is a REAL actor - a master at his craft. Leo is only a movie star. There's a huge difference between the two.

If both click, great. If not, great -- assuming the performance is a very good one. If the performance isn't good, who the heck cares in the end? |
