Anime from the 80's and 90's were the best - Blu-ray Forum

Some of my favourites here. Newcomers, or those wanting to re-discover old anime should definitely look up these.

Cyber City Oedo 808: A brilliant cyberpunk anime, with an over-the-top soundtrack and dubbing. Hilarious insults throughout, with an excellent plot as well.

Guyver: Bio-Boosted Armour is the first anime I saw, and I love it to this day. Kickass action/sci-fi.

Wicked City is for those who love horror anime and can't quite get them the way they're meant to be these days. NSFW at all costs.

Fist of the North Star is another highlight of the 80's. Brutal combat, sick one-liners and one of the best final fights ever.

Akira. Possibly the most famous anime here. Still excellent all these years.

Doomed Megalopolis. Look here for more brutal, shocking occult horror. Keep the kids away.

Devil Man is another horror escapade, with some gnarly as hell sequences, and a badass vibe throughout.

I would kill for another movie that had half the sumptuous sleazy atmosphere as Wicked City though.

80s and 90s are definitely the best for anime but I also love the 70s (Gatchaman, Devilman and Cutie Honey).

I used to rent anime on VHS back in the 90s and I rented them from a small place that's long been out of business, but they carried most all the official anime and bootlegs with bootleg dubs.

Don't forget:
Ghost in the Shell: the precursor to all things The Matrix. Nuff said.

Ninja Scroll: Perhaps the best Ninja/Martial arts anime of all time.

Macross: Do you remember love? : as mentioned previously, this started my fascination with big robots and space operas.

Appleseed: The newer ones benefit from CGI, but the original looks closest to Masaume Shiro's manga. Thought provoking and amazing action.

Gunsmith Cats: Awesome soundtrack, crazy detail, and tons of fun.

I like how unapologetically violent and sexual they were, compared to today. The cel animation added to the grittiness of those times.

It's a shame that many of my favorite 80's anime has not had a proper US blu-ray release.

Since Macross: DYRL has been stated already I'll just say that Onee-sama would be very disappointed if Gunbuster was not mentioned.

Funny I came across this thread because for some strange reason I had the urge to seek out New Dominion Tank Police and placed an order the other day. Again, no blu-ray.

I also wish Metal Skin Panic Madox-01 would get released on blu-ray.

This is my favourite era of anime as well. The cutsie stuff had heart, the violent stuff had guts. It was a good time for all.

I love a lot of songs from anime (and Japanese pop music in general) of this era. I have one of the 'Ranma 1/2' themes as my ring tone and I always feel a warm wave of comfort every time it plays.

This. I was excited to learn that AnimEigo will do another run of Bubblegum Crisis in Sept. I missed out the first time.

I think anime lost something when the industry moved from hand painted cels to digital ink and paint. Everything looks so clean and sterile now. Also, Japan's economy was booming in the '80s and there was lots of cash to put into ambitious anime projects. If you look at OVAs like GunBuster 5 & 6 or Bubblegum Crisis 5 & 6, there is a level of quality that is rarely seen today, even if the art style looks dated now.

All great choices, don't forget Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in The Sky, Nausicaa, Armitage III, Jack and the Beanstalk, Golgo 13 etc. fine examples.

There is some good recent anime movies like Wolf Children, Cowboy Bebop the movie, Metropolis, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, Spirited Away, Arriety, Ponyo, Summer Wars and more.
