Default Star Wars Sequel Trilogy late 80s/early 90s

George Lucas has a number of ideas for where the Skywalker Saga was headed after the OT but he was tired or something and just wanted to end to it and so some decisions made for ROtJ that changed all those plans.

I thought it might be fun to discuss what might have have happened if Lucas had stuck with his earlier ideas or simply carried on with the Saga after the RotJ that we know to make VII, VIII and IX in the late 80s/early 90s.

What kind of VFX tech would Lucas have had then? What new characters and factions would you like to see and who would be cast? What writers and directors?

Then we get the PT, TCW and Lucas returns to the Saga with a X, XI and XII

All the Star Wars threads here contain botching, moaning, aggression, hated and people acting the knob-head.

None of that is allowed here.

And this is all for fun, my interest in it goes all the way back to RotJ so it is not an “anti-Sequel” thread so if you want to cry about that then bog off.

Alternative 1 - Lucas makes a Sequel Trilogy set after the RotJ we know - Luke and Leia are siblings, Emperor is dead and Vader is redeemed. First movie can begin with bringing an end to the last imperials. What new faction or villain rises? Who is cast as Luke’s Padawan?

Alternative 2 - Lucas sticks with his original idea that the other hope is Luke’s sister Nelith (who is as far as I know been the basis for Rey throughout the development of the ST from Lucas, Arndt, etc) who Luke would train as a Jedi. Also he had planned to save the Emperor to the Big Bad for his ST and that Like and Vader would be alone for their big showdown. So this ST would still have Empire. Who would be the Emperor’s new to muscle to replace Vader? Who would you cast as Nellith

Alternative 3 - Lucas sticks with killing off Vader and the Emperor and Luke and Nellith get a new foe.

If you now of an other abandoned concepts by all means throw them in.

What would you lie to have had in a late 80s/early 90s ST? And what way could a X to XII Trilogy in the present day have gone?

Everything that I read about post RotJ films during the mid-80s (mostly in FANTASTIC FILMS) was about prequels that were very political in nature, so the idea would have been something a little more FOUNDATION-like, I think, perhaps a step back (or sideways) toward THX rather than the usual swashbuckling. That would be in tune with some of the other serious stuff GL was involved with at that point, backing Coppola's TUCKER and Kurosawa. I don't for a moment think he'd have had the talent to write something like that but he certainly could have gotten a pro on it, then distilled that into something workable for him. But the articles at the time (and some that appeared in the 90s) reflected that the tech wasn't there to depict a sprawling Empire, that traditional matte paintings and opticals and miniatures were not going to be enough to do it justice. (I don't necessarily think that waiting a decade+ resulted in better product, though it did result in fewer matte lines.)

There was never much of a plan for the ST during the 80's/90's. GL needed a break from SW and the PT had priority over ST anyway.

It's a shame we didn't get the ST 5-10 years earlier than we did though as the OT actors involved seemed to really age during that time

FYI, this is the internet equivalent of a child stomping its feet & throwing a tantrum. If you want people to discuss things with you, might want to start by not insulting everyone who responds. The thread is actually a good idea, but good luck getting any actual discussion on it now.

OK, Ill play - one thing is for sure: Any sequels to the original trilogy would have probably worked much better if they had been released in the late 80's or early 90's at the latest. The sheer amount of time that has passed really did put these sequel films at a huge disadvantage and it shows in the final product.

As for what the plots would be or the story? Id probably OK wwith them pulling from various novels that take place after ROTJ. The Thrawn series always gets mentioned. Then you have the setup where Han and Leia have twins - a boy and a girl. Jacen and Jaina Solo(I think that was their names) and it is Jaina that goes bad, I believe. You could make up some new villains or whatever too but that starts to get hard and it will start feel repetitive if you do the same stuff over and over.

This is why I still maintain that the right choice for "new" Star Wars films needs to be based on what happened way in the past - like early Sith/Jedi stuff. ROTJ ends so perfectly and completes the character arcs that it needs to so well that its hard to imagine anything coming after it thats based on any of the original characters.

I vaguely remember an issue of Starlog magazine or something like that from the mid '80s with speculation on "Star Wars 4," something to do with a blonde Sith woman in some black catsuit, IIRC. I want to say the issue came out in 1984 or 1985 and said that the next movie would be released as soon as 1988. Of course, I can find no trace of it online at the moment....

Easily they should have done the Thrawn trilogy that Timothy Zhan wrote

Theres also
Corilian trilogy
Jedi Academy trilogy
Dark Empire Trilogy

Keep in mind had Lucas actually done what he wanted and not wanted a break from Star Wars ROTJ would not have ended the way it did. In the original ending hence why it was called Revenge of the Jedi originally, Luke takes off Vaders mask, puts it on declares himself Vader and proceeds to wipe out the rebellion. The ending sees Luke sitting on Palaptines throne with Leia standing by his side.

had Lucas not backed down for toy sales or to not disappoint kids, we most likely would have seen a Dark Empire movie or trilogy.

As for the Twins, Han and Leia actually have twins and another child and one of them turns to the Dark side and Luke has to kill him.

RoTJ's original title was....Return Of The Jedi. I don't know where you're getting your other information from with regards to Luke becoming the new Vader (probably the same place you got the info about Jedi's original title) but George Lucas would never have gone with that ending. Oh, and toy sales did not dictate the route that the films took.
