I read the review for flyboys and it said that the ps3 can only play audio at 1.5mbs and its not at the dts lossless level. can I get someone to explain this for me...

The PS3 at the moment can only extract the 1.5mbps core from the DTS MA track. A firmware update that we are all (im)patiently waiting for would allow for internal decoding of it. There is a bit of debate at the moment as to whether or not the PS3 could bitstream it.

I think the PS3 could only bitstream DTSHD/TrueHD if they started rolling out new units with hdmi 1.3a.

This is true, the PS3 does not have the correct chipset to ever be able to bitstream the new audio codecs. The only thing PS3 users can hope for is internal decoding for DTS lossless.

That seems to be the large consensus, and I agree w/ you, but I didn't feel like stoking the fires.

Nothing personal against the poster but i do think there needs to be a sticky on this topic. It appears to come up at least once or twice a week.

You should not have the problem with PCM. I am sure some one could explain it better then me but I believe PCM audio is not compressed so the PS3 just outputs it. You do need to be sure that you have a reciever that can handle PCM audio.

The only problem you might have is if you have a SP/DIF optical receiver. The PS3 only outputs 2 channel PCM or DTS/DD 5.1 over optical.

If you have an HDMI receiver, however, this is not a problem.
