Quote:
From Academy Award®-Winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) comes an "exhilarating brain-twister" (New York Post)! After a blow to the head during his attempted robbery of a $27 million Goya painting, Simon (James McAvoy, X-Men: First Class), a fine-art auctioneer, awakens to find that the painting - and his memory - are missing. Forced by his ruthless crime partner Franck (Vincent Cassel, Black Swan) to undergo hypnosis, Simon enters into a deadly love triangle with his seductive hypnotist (Rosario Dawson, Sin City). As the plot twists, the line between reality and dream becomes blurred in this fast-paced, unpredictable, "sexy and suspenseful" (Empire) thriller.

The trailer looked really interesting and Danny Boyle is one of my favorite directors.

I'm hoping it gets a slip but it probably won't.

Danny Boyle's films frequently stumble underneath the weight of his sublimely colorful rat-tat-tat direction, especially when tackling big topics: poverty (Slumdog Millionaire), survival (127 Hours), and drug addiction (Trainspotting). That's not to say those films aren't thrilling, they are, but his showy visual style and innate nihilism is at odds with the subject matter. That's why viewers remember the blunt impact of his films as opposed to their resonance.

Boyle's latest is his first no-nonsense straight up genre film in quite some time, alongside Shallow Grave, this has few traces of his paper-thin humanism. It's a colorful bullet train-ride into familiar territory: James McAvoy plays an art auctioneer who becomes entangled in a plot to recover a valuable painting. It's a nondescript plot, the tried and true ''everybody's after the what's-it (a particularly valuable painting)" set-up, made palatable by Boyl's willingness to envelop the audience with delicious sensory stimuli and some genuinely entertaining set pieces throughout.

Dutch angles (take notes Tom Hooper and Les Miserables DP Dan Cohen) , extremely low angles, elliptical editing, a bold use of color make each second a delight. The ravishing cinematography manages to complement both the emotions and the fine works of art themselves. Its a shame that the film doesn't have ideas just as intriguing as those pieces. Sure, it's not a terribly substantial thriller, but it goes down as smoothly as a cold carbonated beverage on a scorching summer afternoon.

, if you really dug Shallow Grave, you may like this.

I was with this movie for a while, but grew tired of the film's needlessly heading-scratching twists and turns about halfway through.

Those full frontal shots of Rosario Dawson tho.

I didn't think much of the movie. It starts out well but the plot quickly becomes too convoluted. Double crosses upon double crosses, etc. What ultimately bothered me about the movie was the final explanation of what actually has occurred. We're simply told what happened, there are hints throughout but there's no way you could really guess the full explanation. It felt like a cheat to me. Also it tries to change your allegiance to the characters but doesn't quite succeed.

Outside of McAvoy and Rosario Dawson I felt the movie was miscast, as well. Vincent Cassel is entirely unsympathetic and his henchmen are forgettable scene to scene.

I really loved Trance, definitely walking a fine line between madness and genius, either way, it was relentlessly insane. I will certainly be watching this a few more times.

This movie had me intrigued since the first time I saw the trailer.

To blind-buy or not to blind-buy?

But, according to what you all are writing, this is exactly the type of film that falls into the "risky blind buy" category.

(when it comes to blind buying blu's, there's two types):
1. Hamburgers.
2. Sea Urchin Ceviche

The "hamburgers" are big titles like "Iron Man 3" or "Dark Knight" or "Jack Reacher", which seem catered to be liked by all types of people. They're a safe blind buy.

The "Sea Urchin Ceviche's" are niche titles like "Sleeping Beauty (2011)" or "Mulholland Drive" or "The Square" or "Shame". They may be you're favorite, but they may be your least favorite.

I wonder if I should take a chance and blind buy this?

Yep. It's more of an extended capsule, I would like to think my most recent writing is much better.
