Germany The Zone of Interest (Jonathan Glazer. June 2024)

TBC

Like a bit of Glazer. I'm not even going to watch the trailer for this. I'm in. My brain and eyes have been booked.

Notes about this edition (for non-German speakers):
  • Film - in German, subtitled in English;
  • 4 Making-of featurettes - in English, subtitled in German;
  • Interview with Sandra Hüller & Christian Friedel - in German, not subtitled.

Picture quality is amazing. Sadly, no reversible cover.

Nicwood had a different opinion of it:

Jonathan Glazer wanted to convey the exact opposite and create a direct, unfiltered portal into what's on screen. This BD achieves the exact opposite and is fatally flawed.

Fair enough. I'm not here to argue about who's right or wrong, as we're all entitled to our (subjective) opinions.

Clearly the BD didn't correspond to his (admittedly very high) expectations - expectations about what he thinks it should look like, let's be clear. To my (admittedly old) eyes, it looks as good as I could ever expect from a blu-ray. I think it's a beautiful and nearly flawless transfer, with no perceptible encoding issues whatsoever, and pretty much in line - in every regard - with what I saw at the cinema earlier this year.

As an aside, this was my movie of the year (2023), so I obviously care about the quality of this edition and, for me, it delivers. And even if that weren't the case, this is such a monumental film in so many ways, that image quality would literally be the least of my worries, to be perfectly honest (Nicwood himself calls it "intentionally dull", and rightfully so).

I mean, I don't own the disc but looking at the screencaps from this review the BD honestly looks embarrassing. Like actually recall worthy.

Well, if you're looking under the microscope (i.e. at a tiny zoomed-in rectangle) and comparing it side-by-side with the UHD... yeah, no sh*t! If you're actually watching the film (not static images) and from a normal viewing-distance, it looks totally fine (the first commenter on that site basically says the same). I mean, show me any blu-ray that won't strain when you're looking at a zoomed screencap where pixels are nearly 2mm in size.

Don't get me wrong, I am obsessed with image quality, and I've purchased several films multiple times just to get a slightly improved transfer. I just don't see what the problem with this blu-ray is. Again, when viewed under normal conditions. Also, in terms of colour grading, I much prefer it than the overly-saturated and not-natural-looking-at-all UHD (I'm in agreement with Nicwood here).

Anyway, let's wait to see how future releases looks like. If I had to bet, I'd say they will look absolutely identical. But I'm open to be proven wrong.
